McGoughs Who Moved from Harford County, Maryland, to Cambria County, Pennsylvania

Three sons and a daughter of Miles McGough and Elizabeth Spencer moved from the place of their birth, Harford county, Maryland, to Cambria county, Pennnsylvania, between 1803 and 1807. The sons were: James McGough, born about 1760; Miles McGough (junior), born about 1762; and Thomas McGough, born about 1765. These three sons moved to Cambria county in about 1803, and raised their families there. James and Miles (junior) died in Cambria county. Thomas moved his family to Belmont county, Richland township, Ohio, sometime before 1820, and died in Ohio.

Miles McGough and Elizabeth Spencer had a daughter, Elizabeth, who was born about 1767. She married Patrick William Dempsey around 1793, and they had at least eleven children. They moved from Harford county, Maryland, to Cambria county, Pennsylvania, before 1807, and later to Perry county, Ohio, and Huntingdon county, Indiana. The history of these families before they moved to Cambria county will be found in my page: McGoughs in Pre-Revolutionary America: Miles and Elizabeth Spencer McGough.

This page traces the history of these families and their descendants after their move from eastern Maryland to western Pennsylvania.

Mark O'Neill has published a comprehensive genealogy of the descendants of Miles McGough and Elizabeth Spencer. That work offers more detail on the later generations of this family than does this summary of the family through the late 1800s. See O'Neill ancestry—McGoughs by Mark O'Neill, a gedcom on Ancestry.com.

On names listed in the genealogies on this page, I sometimes precede names of later generations of the Miles McGough family with a number to indicate the degree of removal from Miles McGough and Elizabeth Spencer. 2=son or daughter; 3=grandchild; 4=great grandchild; and so on.

The History Of Cambria County, Pennsylvania, was written by Henry Wilson Storey and published in 1907. The book spans 1,844 pages and was published in three volumes. This monumental work includes genealogical memoirs and sketches of the early Euro-American settlers in Cambria county, a history of the Indian tribes of the Conemaugh Valley, information on the Pennsylvania Canal and the New Portage Railroad, the Johnstown Flood and more. Volumes 2 and 3 of Storey's work have been published on the Internet; see County Histories ~ The History Books From The Turn Of The Century on the website Genealogical & Historical Research in Old-Bedford County on the Mother Bedford website.

Cambria County, Pennsylvania

Cambria, Huntingdon, and Westmoreland counties in Pennsylvania all are part of the original Bedford county. See: Genealogical and Historical Research in Old-Bedford County on the Mother Bedford website maintained by Larry D. Smith, who says:

"In 1773 the County of Westmoreland was erected out of the western half of Bedford. Bedford County was left with the region encompassed by present-day Huntingdon, Fulton, Blair, Bedford, Cambria and Somerset counties. It is that region that is Mother Bedford."

Cambria county was created from Huntingdon and Somerset counties on March 26, 1804. "To create Cambria, the legislature took Frankstown Township from Huntingdon County; from Somerset it took Conemaugh Township and Cambria Township, for which the new County was named. A small corner section of Bedford County was also included." "At this time the new County had three political sub-divisions—Allegheny, Cambria and Conemaugh Townships. Allegheny included all of the northern third of the County—the part which was taken from Huntingdon County. Cambria Township, in the center section, and Conemaugh Township, in the south, retained names they were given when they were in Somerset County." "The first change in this three-way division came in 1810, when the County's population reached 2,117. That year Summerhill Township was created from a part of Conemaugh Township." "The eastern boundary follows the meandering crest of the Allegheny Mountains." See: Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

In the 1830 census of Cambria County, Summerhill township, James, John, and Thomas McGough are on the same page (Roll 161 Book 1, Page 211a).

The Biographical & Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County, Pennsylvania, is available on line, is word-searchable, and contains several biographies of McGoughs.

Johnstown Flood

The Johnstown flood of May 31, 1889, claimed more than 2000 lives in the towns of the Conemaugh valley, Cambria county, Pennsylvania—principally in Johnstown. There were descendants of Miles McGough living in Johnstown at the time of the flood, but none appears on the casualty lists.

"The rain continued as men worked tirelessly to prevent the old South Fork Dam (14 miles north of Johnstown) from breaking. Elias Unger, the president of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, was hoping that the people in Johnstown were heeding the telegraph warnings sent earlier, which said that the dam might go. When it finally happened, at 3:10 P.M., May 31, 1889, an era of the Conemaugh Valley's history ended, and another era started. Over 2,209 people died on that tragic Friday, and thousands more were injured in one of the worst disasters in our Nation's history."

On September 27, 1889, fifteen weeks after the flood, workmen removing mud and sand from a cellar in Millville borough, five rods from the schoolhouse and about 2 miles from East Conemaugh, found the body of Mrs. Ed Swineford. The feet lay on the wall between the cellars of Morgan Rees and J. McGough, with the head and trunk hanging down in Rees' cellar. Place, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 1890, 369 pages.)

Dr. Michael R. McGough published his book, The1889 Flood in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in April, 2002 (Thomas Publications). "This book is a marvelous achievement in the telling of the history of the Flood." The Johnstown Flood of 1889—A Historiography.

George Thomas McGough was born in Johnstown on May 24, 1889, seven days before the flood. Both his father and his mother were great-grandchildren of James McGough, son of Miles McGough (senior). George Thomas McGough was the first-born son of George Gallitzin McGough and Harriet McGough. George Gallitzin McGough was born on May 16, 1862, in Croyle township, Cambria county, and was the son of Thomas McGough (and Isabella Plummer), who was the son of Thomas McGough (and Mary Ann Skelly), who was the son of James McGough (and Esther James), who was the son of Miles McGough (senior) (and Elizabeth Spencer).

George Gallitzin McGough married another McGough, Harriet A. McGough. She was born in Cambria county on May 27, 1867, the daughter of Philip McGough (and Mary E. Conrad), who was the son of James J. McGough (and Sophia Frueh), who was the son of James McGough (and Esther James), who was the son of Miles McGough (senior) (and Elizabeth Spencer).

Thomas McGough, who was born to James J. McGough and Sophia Frueh McGough on February 9, 1834, in Cambria county died in Johnstown, East Taylor township, Cambria county, on November 13, 1889, a little over 5 months after the flood. He is listed in the 1870 census of the 2nd ward of Johnstown as age 34, a housepainter, with a family. He was the grandson of James McGough And Esther James, and the great-grandson of Miles McGough and Elizabeth Spencer.

Six days after the Johnstown flood, the great Seattle fire of June 6, 1889, destroyed the central part of Seattle. Another James McGough was part of that history. See my page: The Great Seattle Fire—Don't Blame Jimmie McGough.

James McGough (c. 1760 – 1812)

James McGough was born to Miles Mcgough and Elizabeth Spencer McGough about 1760 in Harford county, Maryland. He died in 1812 in Conemaugh township (or Summerhill, Croyle township), Cambria county, Pennsylvania.

In about 1784 in Harford county, Maryland, James McGough married Esther James, who had been born about 1763 in Baltimore county, Maryland. Esther James was the daughter of Richard James, who died on September 27, 1777, in Harford county, Maryland, and was probably a sister of Richard James who served in 1775 and 1776 with Hugh McGough as a member of Captain William Webb's company of Maryland Militia. Esther was raised a Presbyterian and converted to Catholicism. She died about 1843 at Summerhill, Croyle Township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania, and is buried in St. Bartholomew's Cemetery, Wilmore, Pennsylvania.

The 1790 US census shows James McGough living with his wife and family in Harford county, Maryland, near his mother, Elizabeth Spencer McGough:

75 185 MGeough Jm. (roll 3, book 1, page 99), close to Elizabeth MGeough. Family of 7: 1 free white male 16 and up; 3 free white males to 16; 3 females.

The 1800 US census lists a James Megeough (indexed by Genealogy.com as McGeough) in Maryland, Harford county (Locale: 5-District, series M32, roll 11, part 1, page 129), next to Thomas Megeough, with 2 free white males to 10, 1 free white male to 16; 1 free white male between 26 and 45; 4 free white females under 10; 3 free white females between 10 and 16; 1 free white female between 26 and 45 (and 2 slaves)

James McGough probably moved to Croyle township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania in about 1803. He is on the tax list of Croyle township in 1805. Between 1802 and the end of 1804, he disposed of his real estate holding in Harford county, Maryland. For more details, see my page: McGoughs in Pre-Revolutionary America: Miles and Elizabeth Spencer McGough

The real estate records (volume 4, page 334) of Cambria county show that, on May 29, 1807, Christian Troyer conveyed to James McGough of Conemaugh township 202 acres, part of land called Hermitage, for $400.

The Loretto Centenary: Paschal Confessions (1811) lists:

McGough, James, John, Thomas, Esther, Esther, Sarah.

Family Story: Was a civil engineer for George Washington, did surveying for roads in Pennsylvania. He was a farmer, school teacher, civil engineer and pioneer in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. May have been married twice (unproven). Died intestate. March. 1814. Estate account presented in court. Settled September, 1815. Public sale of land in November, 1815. Cambria County Orphans Court records.

James McGough died intestate in Cambria county in March of 1812. (Cambria County volume 11-387; file #18.) "Owned 202 acres in Conemaugh township, leaving a widow, Hester (or Ester, Esther), and seven children:"

In 1815, the Cambria county land was sold to settle the estate. On September 5, 1815, in Cambria county, a court entry reads:

"The parties in the estate of James McGough dec'd appearing in Court, and being called severally refused to take the land in the inquisition named at the appraisement. The Court ordered that the land be exposed to public sale on the first Monday in November next." [Orphan court records, Cambria County Pennsylvania Genealogy.]

The 1820 census of Pennsylvania shows Esther McGough living with a family of 4 in Cambria county, Summerhill township (roll 98, page 191) with 1 male between 16 and 18 [James J.]; 1 male between 16 and 26 [also James J. ?]; 1 female between 10 and 16 [Sarah (Sally)]; and 1 female between 26 and 45 [Esther]. Esther James McGough was about 57 years old in 1820.

Children of James McGough and Esther James:

3. Thomas McGough, born about 1785 (or 1788), in Deer Creek Upper Hundred, Harford county, Maryland; married Mary Ann Skelly on June 9, 1812 in St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria county, Pennsylvania. Souvenir of Loretto Centenary, page 138. (see also: U.S./International Marriage Records, 1340-1980 on Genealogy.com.); died May 14, 1870, in Summerhill, Croyle Township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania; buried at church of St. Bartholomew, Wilmore, Cambria county, Pennsylvania. Mary Ann Skelly was born in about 1795 in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, died in about 1870 in Cambria county, Pennsylvania, and is buried in St. Bartholomew's cemetery, Wilmore, Cambria county, Pennsylvania. Thomas was a farmer and a teacher. Thomas McGough and Mary Ann Skelly were married by Father Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin, whose church was in Loretto. A witness was John Burke, probably the same John Burke who married Thomas's sister, Esther.

In the 1830 census of Cambria county, Summerhill township, (James, John, and Thomas are on the same page (Roll 161 Book 1, Page 211a).

The 1820 census of Pennsylvania shows: Thomas McGough, Cambria county, Summerhill township (roll 98, page 191). 2 males under 10; 1 male 26 to 45; 1 female under 10; 1 female 26 to 45. One person was engaged in agriculture.

Obituary: Cambria Freeman, Ebensburg Friday 7 October 1887; page 3,c

2 KILLED ON THE RAILROAD: On Sat. last Mr. James McGough, an old citizen of Summerhill Twp, while returning to his home from Wilmore was instantly killed by a freight train on the railroad. Mr. McGough who was about 70 years of age left Wilmore between 5 and 6 o'clock to walk home, a distance of about 2 miles. When at the station at Wilmore, he started down the railroad track which is somewhat nearer than following the township road and had got down to where he would turn off to take a path that leads to his house. He started across the track—in some unaccountable manner failed to notice a train that was coming up stepped directly in front of it and was of course struck and instantly killed, the body being thrown about 20 ft. to the side and when the train was stopped, life was extinct. Mr. McGough was a widower, his wife having died about 2 years ago. He leaves a family of 6 children all grown up, 4 sons—John, Thomas, Paredius, and William; and 2 daughters, both married—the one, wife of Charles Fresh and the other married to Albert Carpenter. Mr. McGough was born in Summerhill Township and was a brother of Messers John, Patrick, William and Daniel McGough and Mrs. Boyle and Miss Elizabeth McGough who all reside in that neighborhood. He was a member of the Catholic Church and his his remains were interred in St. Bartholomew's Cemetery at Wilmore on Monday last.

Here is an article about Daniel A. McGough, grandson of Thomas and Mary Skelly McGough, and son of Thomas and Isabella Plummer McGough, from the Biographical & Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County, Pennsylvania, pages 198–9:

"Daniel A. McGough, ex-register and recorder, and a descendant of two very old and highly respectable families of the county, is a son of Thomas and Isabella (Plummer) McGough, and was born in Croyle township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania, May 13, 1856. His paternal great-grandfather, James McGough, was a native of Ireland, and came to this country with his brother, Patrick, who fought under Washington, and fell at the battle of Princeton. James McGough first settled near Baltimore, in Harford county, Maryland, where he married Esther James, of Welsh descent, and in 1806 came to what is now Croyle township, in which he died six years later. He was a farmer, school-teacher and a civil engineer, and ranked as one of the pioneer settlers of Croyle township, in which he owned a large tract of valuable land.

"Of his sons, Thomas Sr., was born in Harford county, Maryland, and died in 1870, at eighty-five years of age. He was a man of better education than was usually enjoyed by the men who lived in that time, and belonged to that old school of school-masters characteristic of the day, and to whom the early educational progress of this country owes so much. Thomas McGough, Sr., like his father, was a farmer and teacher. He was a Catholic, served for twenty-five years as a justice of the peace, and wedded Mary Skelly, by whom he had ten children, six sons and four daughters. Next to the youngest of these children was Thomas McGough, the father of the subject of this sketch.

"Thomas McGough was born October 27, 1827, and resided on a farm in his native township until his death, which occurred May 14, 1870. He was a farmer and cooper by occupation and trade, a democrat in politics and a Catholic in religion. He married Isabella Plummer, of Summerhill township, in 1855, and to their union were born three sons: Daniel A., Charles and George, who are both in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad company, at Conemaugh.

"Mrs. McGough, who is still living, is a daughter of John and Mary (Fye) Plummer, belongs to the Plummer family of western Pennsylvania, so well known for its many good qualities.

"Daniel A. McGough grew to manhood on the paternal acres, received his education in the common schools, and then was engaged in farming and teaching school until 1885, in which year he was appointed as clerk to the board of county commissioners. In that position Mr. McGough served continuously for seven years, and his services had so recommended him that he was nominated and elected, by the Democratic party, as register and recorder of Cambria county, for a term of three years. His services in his elective offices were as valuable and as acceptable as had been his labors in his appointed position, and at the expiration of his term in 1895 he retired with credit to himself. A democrat in political associations, he has never accepted office but once at the hands of his party, although sufficiently popular to have been so honored frequently. The burdens and responsibility of public care have no special charms for him, yet he is not averse to the labors and duties of public life. Exact, careful and accurate, he is well fitted for private and public business.

"On June 14, 1888, Daniel A. McGough was united in marriage with Harriet Eberly, a daughter of Francis Eberly, of Munster township. Their union has been blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters: Mary, Esther, Thomas Francis and James."

3. Elizabeth McGough, born about 1799 in Harford county, Maryland; married John Skelly (born on February 23, 1792, in Tuckahoe Valley, Bedford county, Pennsylvania) in about 1819 in Cambria county; died about 1872 in Pennsylvania. 8 children born in Cambria county. John Skelly, who married Elizabeth McGough, was the brother of Michael Skelly, who married Elizabeth's sister, Rachel. Here is a biography (with some additional paragraphing) of a son of Elizabeth McGough, Alexander J. Skelly, from the Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County by Samuel Wiley, page 314 (1896, Union Publishing Company):

"Alexander J. Skelly, the present burgess of Wilmore, and a man of varied business and railroad experience in different States, helped to build the first mile of the great Union Pacific railway whose completion connected by rail the 'ocean of storms to the ocean of peace.' He is a son of John and Elizabeth (McGough) Skelly, and was born near Wilmore, in Summerhill township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania, May 25, 1833. His paternal grandfather, John Skelly, Sr., was a Scotch-Irishman, and with six brothers came from County Antrim to Maryland, settling on Antietam Creek, where the great battle of Antietam was fought in 1862.

"They afterward made their home in Tuckahoe Valley, Blair county, where five of them were killed by Indians. John Skelly, Sr., was one of the two that escaped, and in 1809 he came to Cambria county, where he died fifty-three years later. His son, John Skelly, was born in the Tuckahoe Valley, February 23, 1792, and attended the old district or subscription schools but three days. He was a self-educated man, and in 1827 came to Cambria county, where he followed farming as an occupation, and died December 12, 1867. He was a Jacksonian democrat, served one term as county auditor, and held most of the township offices. He was a member of the Catholic church and an active and industrious man.

"In 1819 he married Elizabeth McGough, and their children were: James, who died in Texas aged seventy years; John, died in this county at sixty-two years of age; Sarah, widow of John Wolf and a resident of Oklahoma; Elizabeth, widow of Frank Christy; Mary; Alexander J.; and Philip, a farmer of near Wilmore. Mrs. Skelly, who died in 1872, aged seventy-three years, was a daughter of James McGough, who was a slave-holder of Baltimore Maryland, and came at thirty-five years of age to Cambria county, where he manumitted his slaves and afterwards accumulated quite a large amount of property. James McGough married and his children were: Thomas, James, Jr., Elizabeth, wife of John Skelly; and Sarah, all of whom are dead.

"Alexander J. Skelly was reared to farm pursuits, attended the public schools, and worked for one year on the Portage railroad. He then served two years as a conductor on the Pennsylvania railroad, and in 1860 engaged in farming and the lumber business, which pursuits he followed up to 1874, when he went to Texas, where he was a clerk for the Texas Pacific Railroad company in their Dallas office for six months and served for them the same length of time as a passenger conductor. A year later he went to Fairfield, Iowa, where he was in the real-estate and insurance business up to 1884. In that year he returned to Cambria county, and after conducting a hotel at Summerhill for two years, removed to Wilmore. He then traveled as salesman for the Irwin Mill company for two years. At the end of that time, in 1888, he was elected justice of the peace for a term of five years, and at its expiration in 1893 was re-elected for a second term of five years. He was elected burgess in 1890, re-elected in 1891, 1892, and in 1893 for a term of three years.

"On February 57, 1874, Squire Skelly was united in marriage with Rebecca J. Madden, a daughter of Spencer Madden, of St. Thomas, Franklin county. Squire Skelly is an old-time democrat, is ever active in local politics, and was the first jury commissioner elected in Cambria county. While serving as jury commissioner he drew the first colored man who ever served on a jury in the State of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Clinton Lodge, No.4, F. and A. M., of Fairfield, Iowa; and while on a visit west in 1865, helped to build the first mile of the Union Pacific railway. Squire Skelly's life-record has been one of activity and honorable success, and he now enjoys the fruits of many years of toil in several different business pursuits."

The deceased was a son of Thomas and Margaret McDonnell McGough. His father was a native of Croyle Township and his mother was born in Ireland. At the time of Hilbert's birth they resided on Market Street, Second Ward, near Washington Street. The deceased went to St. John's parochial school here many years ago and later learned a trade under the late Charles L. Breniser in the Cambria's machine shop. Obituary: Johnstown Daily Tribune. Wednesday, January 19, 1887.

A FLAGMANS FATAL INJURY Philip McGough, of East Conemaugh, struck by the engine of the Mail Train from Benscreek and so badly hurt that death results.

The engine of the Mail Train last evening struck Phil McGough, flagman of local freight west, at Benscreek, on the mountain, and fatally injured him. The freight had stopped at Benscreek to do some shifting, and Mr. McGough had gone back to flag the train. When the shifting was done he was called in by his engineer, and turned to retrace his steps to his train. He was walking between the tracks when the engine of the Mail Train whistled and he must have become bewildered or confused, for he stepped on the track directly in front of the Mail. He realized his mistake just before the engine was upon him and had time enough to step on the end of the ties outside the rail, but the engine struck him on his right side and knocked him down.

His right leg was broken near the ankle, his head was badly cut, his back bruised, and his breast hurt. He also sustained internal injuries. He was brought to his home in East Conemaugh, where he was attended by Drs. John and W. B. Loman. His condition was regarded from the first as quite critical and hence his death, which followed at half past 10 o'clock this afternoon, was not a surprise. He was conscious to the last.

Deceased was 51 years of age. He leaves a wife and 6 or 7 children. His wife's maiden name was Mary Conrad. She was raised at Newry, Blair County. Mr. McGough was born and raised about 2 miles from Summerhill. He had been on the PRR about 25 years. His brother Thomas McGough, a house painter, resides in Johnstown.

Miles McGough (junior) (c. 1762 –

Miles McGough and Elizabeth Spencer had a son named Miles who was born in Harford county Maryland in about 1762. To avoid confusion between father and son, I call the son Miles (junior) and the father Miles (senior). Miles (junior) and his wife, Mary, moved to Cambria county, Pennsylvania, around 1803. For the earlier history of this family go to my page: McGoughs in Pre-Revolutionary America: Miles and Elizabeth Spencer McGough

There is a record of one daughter born to Miles (junior) and Mary McGough: Margaret McGough, who was born on December 21, 1803, in Cambria county. She was christened on May 23, 1804, in St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria county.

Miles McGough was on the 1803 and 1815 tax lists for Cambria county, Pennsylvania. The Loretto Centenary lists Miles McGough with his wife Mary and daughter Margaret, born in 1803. The 1820 census records indicate that by then Miles McGough had 2 sons and 3 daughters.

The court records of Cambria county show a lawsuit involving Miles McGough: Conemaugh Country—History & Genealogy of Cambria County, volume 1 #2, page 9: "Sept Term 1808, Civil Court Docket of Cambria Co: #6 Miles McGough vs Ludwick Dunmyre. Transcript from the Judgment docket of Abraham Hildebrand, J.P."

The 1820 census of Cambria county, Pennsylvania, Conemaugh township (roll 98. book 1, page 196), lists Miles McGough with a family of 7: 1 male under 10; 1 male 10 to 16; 1 male over 45; 2 females 10 to 16; 1 female 16 to 26; 1 female 45 or older. 1 person was engaged in agriculture. [Johnstown, Pennsylvania, is only a few miles west of Conemaugh. Johnstown is about 150 miles west of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which in turn is about 70 miles up the Susquehanna River from Harford county, Maryland.]

There is a reference to Miles (junior) in Your Family Tree, volume XXVIII (Winter 1982 #1, pages 124–5): "20 Sept 1839: Inquisition taken before Robert P. Linton, High Sheriff & Isaac Teeter, Emanuel Shaffer, William Barnett, John Flanegan, Jacob Myers, Shepley Priestly, Jacob Levergood, David B. Wakefield, John Arthurs, David Linger, Jacob Goughenour, & Miles McGough, twelve free & honest men went to land of George Hildebran, deceased, & found the lands could not be parted & valued the same at $850. Inquisition confirmed."

Here are the children of Miles (junior) and Mary McGough, in addition to Margaret McGough, born in 1803:

Thomas McGough (c. 1765 –

Thomas McGough and his wife Sarah (Sarah James, daughter of Henry James and Martha Chocke) moved from Harford county, Maryland, to Cambria county, Pennsylvania, in 1803 or 1804. In Harford county, Thomas and Sarah McGough had occupied a tract in Traveller's Rest that adjoined the tract occupied by his brother James McGough, and sister-in-law, Esther James McGough. For the earlier history of this family see my page: McGoughs in Pre-Revolutionary America: Miles and Elizabeth Spencer McGough.

Thomas and Sarah continued to hold an interest in land in Maryland. On May 24, 1813, and October 19, 1815, Thomas McGough and Sarah McGough were named as holding a part interest in land in Maryland described as "Ogg King of Bashan, Outlet of Piersons Outlet, Whetherells Addition, Salisbury. Here is a summary of the book entitled The ancestors and descendants of Tom McGough and Nellie Gilbertson by Margie Drumm Harrison & Lisa Drumm Myers (call number 929.273 M177h in JSMB US/CAN Book) in the Family History Library Catalogue.

"Thomas J. McGough (1853-1948), son of Thomas McGough and Suzanne Whitmore, was born in Falls City, Ohio and died in Perkins, Oklahoma. He married 1900 in Gibson City, Illinois, Nellie Gilbertson (1883-1956), daughter of Austin Gilbertson (Østen Gudbrandsen Ulimoen) of Gjovik, Norway and his wife, Valborg Olsen of Olso, Norway. She was born in Gibson City, Illinois. The earliest known direct ancestor, John McGough (1803-1892), was born in Maryland. He married on September 14, 1825, Hanora Grace (d. 1889) in Perry Co., Ohio. Couple lived in Ohio until they moved with their children and their families to Illinois, near Rutland. Austin Gilbertsen immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1866 to Illinois via Quebec. He was born in Nordre Land parish, Oppland co., Norway. Descendants live in Illinois, Oklahoma and elsewhere."

The 1820 US census of Ohio for Belmont county, Richmond township (roll 86, book 1, page 113) lists Thomas McGough with a family of 9 (or 10?): 1 free white male under 10; 3 free white males 10 to 16; 1 free white male between 16 and 18; 1 free white male 16 to 26; 1 free white male 45 and above; 2 free white females 16 to 26; 1 free white female of 45 and above; with 3 people engaged in agriculture. (1 3 1 1 - 1 - - 2 - 1 - 3 - - - - - - - - - - 9) Son of Miles McGough (senior), born about 1765 in Harford county, Maryland. See O'Neill Ancestry.

[The 1820 census of Pennsylvania for Cambria county, lists Thomas McGough, Cambria county, Summerhill township (roll 98 book 1, page 191) in a household of 5: 2 males under 10; 1 male 26 to 45; 1 female under 10; 1 female 26 to 45. One person was engaged in agriculture. This is not the son of Miles McGough as sometimes indicated, but a grandson, son of James and Esther James McGough.]

Children of Thomas and Sarah McGough (from O'Neill Ancestry):

4. Sarah McGough, born about 1801 in Harford county, Maryland; married Stephen D. Ward in Perry county, Ohio, on January 29, 1828. 5 children. The 1850 census of Washington township, Miami county, Ohio, lists Thomas McGough, age 85, farmer, born in Maryland, and his wife Sarah, age 77, born in Maryland, in the household of their son-in-law, Stephen D. Ward, age 46, carpenter, born in Pennsylvania, and their daughter, Stephen's wife, Sarah (McGough) Ward, age 49, born in Maryland.

4. John McGough, born on February 23, 1803, in Harford county, Maryland; married Hannorah (or Hannah) Grace (born in Ireland about 1806) on September 14, 1825, in Perry county, Ohio; died on July 27, 1892, in Rutland, LaSalle county, Illinois; buried in Reilley Cemetery, Rutland, LaSalle county, Illinois. (See WFT, volume 4, tree 1875). His wife, Hannorah Grace McGough, died in in Groveland, LaSalle county, Illinois, at age 83 on February 2, 1889. (See Haskett Family Tree on Ancestry.com.)

John Mcgough is listed in the Marriage Index: Selected Counties of Ohio, 1789–1850. His spouse is Grace, Hannah. The marriage date is September 14, 1825.

Here is a posting in the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin, volume 19, number 1, Winter 1978, Queries and Answers, page 71, as published on Genealogy.com:

"19.5 McGough, Grace. Seek parents and birthplace of John McGough, born in Maryland in 1803. Supposedly a descendant of Miles McGough who landed in Baltimore in 1740 (the text mistakenly says 1640). John married Hannorah Grace in the 1820s. Had several children in Ohio. Moved to Illinois in 1852. Any information on the McGough family in Maryland would be appreciated. /s/ Catherine Patten Haar. ..."

See the Patten Family Tree (and several other family trees) on Ancestry.com: John McGough, born 1803 in Maryland, died in 1892 in LaSalle county, Osage township, Illinois. Married Hannorah (or Honorah or Hannah) Grace on September 14, 1825, in Perry county, Ohio. Hannorah was born in Ireland in 1805, was in Ohio in 1825 (probably Zanesville, Perry county), and died in Rutland, Marshall county, Illinois on February 22, 1889. John was the son of Thomas and Sarah McGough. Thomas was born in Maryland in 1765, and died in Ohio between 1806 and 1856. Hannorah was the daughter of Philip Grace (1766–1840) and Nancy Karr (1768–1840). Philip Grace was born in Ireland and died in Ohio. (Philip Grace, between 60 and 70 years old is listed in the 1830 census of Jackson township, Perry county, Ohio; with a wife also between 60 and 70 years old; and a daughter between 15 and 20 years of age. Listed next to him is James Grace, between 20 and 30 years old, probably Philip's son. NARA roll M19–137; Family History Film: 0337948.)

1840 census, Perry county, Jackson township, Ohio: McGough, John. Males 2 (5-10); 1 (30-40) Females 1 (0-5); 1 (5-10); 1 (10-15); 1 (30-40).

1870 census, LaSalle county, Osage township (Wenona P O.), Illinois: McGough, John 67 farmer 1600/400, born in Maryland; Hannah 65, born in Ireland (indexed by Ancestry.com as McGuegh).

Children of John McGough and Hannorah Grace:

5. Thomas McGough, born September 12, 1827, in Perry county, Ohio; married Suzanne Whitmore (born about 1830 in Ohio) on April 30, 1848, in Perry county, Ohio, by whom he had three children; then married Mary Jane Watts (born about 1829 in Pennsylvania) on July 5, 1857, in Henry, Marshall county, Illinois, by whom he had three more children; died January 13, 1913 in Perkins, Payne county, Oklahoma (at the home of his son, Thomas J. McGough). His son, Thomas J. McGough, married as his second wife Petranelle Dagma (Nellie) Gilbertson on January 23, 1900, in Gibson City, Ford county, Illinois, and a genealogy of this family has been published:

Here is a quote from The Ancestors and Descendants of Tom McGough and Nellie Gilbertson by Margie Drumm Harrison and Lisa Drumm Myers (US/CAN 929.273 M177h in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City), page 17, which describes the location of these McGoughs after they left Magnolia Village, Putnam county, Illinois:

"The McGoughs lived later in Kansas City where Mary Jane Watts McGough died. Thomas McGough died January 13, 1913 at the home of his son, Thomas J., in Perkins, Oklahoma. He was 86 years old. A Catholic priest from Stillwater went to Perkins to conduct the service at the Catholic Church. He had spent the last three years of his life with his son in Perkins and rests beside him in the Perkins cemetery."

Census 1870: Illinois, McLean county, Cropsey township (Potosi P. O.): McGough, Thomas, 48, farmer, born in Ohio; Mary, 45, born in Pennsylvania. Children, all born in Illinois: Mary A 6, Philip 2. Also living with the family was Thomas Majors, 17, a farm hand, born in Ohio.

Census 1880: The family is in Drummer township, Ford county, Illinois.

5. Catherine McGough, born in Ohio in 1829, married Thomas Patten on October 26, 1852, in Zanesville, Muskingum county, Ohio, at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church by Rev. F.C. Montgomery; 6 children. Catherine died at age 76 in Rutland, LaSalle county, Illinois, on January 6, 1905, and is buried there in Riley's Cemetery, with her husband who had died in Rutland at age 75 on February 15, 1902. The 1880 census of Groveland, LaSalle county, Illinois, lists John McGough, age 77, born in Maryland to parents born in Maryland, and Hanorah McGough age 75, born in Ireland to parents born in Ireland, as the father-in-law and mother-in-law of Thomas Pattin (sic), age 54, born in Ohio to parents born in Ireland, a farmer; his wife, Catherine (McGough) Pattin, age 51, born in Ohio to parents born in Ireland; and four Pattin children, all born in Ohio and all at school: Mary, age 19; Thomas, age 17; Sarah, age 16; and Phillip, age 10 (roll 223, page 250B; Family History Film: 1254223).

5. Philip McGough, born about 1830 in Ohio, married Sarah J. Boman (or Bowman) (born about 1835 in Ohio) in about 1854. 11 children. Their third son and fifth child was Hugh McGough, who was born in Ohio in about 1860, and who married Catherine Kennedy. (Philip McGough, son of John McGough and Hanna Johanna Grace, was baptized in Perry county, Ohio, on September 26, 1830. Early Baptism Records of St. Joseph's Near Somerset (1818–1834).)

Here is a quote from The Ancestors and Descendants of Tom McGough and Nellie Gilbertson by Margie Drumm Harrison and Lisa Drumm Myers (US/CAN 929.273 M177h in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City), page 14:

"Philip and Sarah lived in Illinois and then on a farm near Parson, Kansas, for 35 years. In 1904, they moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Philip died on September 4, 1920, in Dewey, Oklahoma at the age of 89."

5. Sarah Ann McGough, born about 1832, in Ohio. She married and lived in Illinois near her parents and brothers and sisters, but her married name is unknown. (Sarah Ann McGough, daughter of John McGough and Hanna Grace, was baptized in Perry county, Illinois, on May 26, 1833. Early Baptism Records of St. Joseph's Near Somerset (1818–1834).)

Here is a quote from The Ancestors and Descendants of Tom McGough and Nellie Gilbertson by Margie Drumm Harrison and Lisa Drumm Myers (US/CAN 929.273 M177h in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City), page 11:

"Baptismal certificates for Sarah Ann and Philip have been located in Muskingum County, Ohio, indicating that John and Hanora must have been located in the Falls City area north of Zanesville soon after their marriage. Among the witnesses for the baptisms of their children were several of Hanora's relatives, including Margaret Grace. Philip Grace and Catherine Grace. These given names, as well as Thomas, Sarah, Mary and John from the McGough side, were handed down from generation to generation.

"John and Hanora lived in Ohio until they moved with their children and their families to Illinois, near Rutland. Hanora Grace McGough died February 22, 1889 and John McGough died July 27, 1892. They are buried near Rutland, Illinois."

5. Margaret McGough, born about 1838 in Ohio, married David Horner (born in Ireland about 1837, died in Oklahoma about 1904), 7 children.

4. Elizabeth McGough, born in Harford county Maryland. The usually reliable O'Neil Ancestry says that this Elizabeth McGough married Colbert Amerine on January 7, 1850, in Miami county, Ohio. If an Elizabeth McGough was born to Thomas and Sarah McGough in Harford county, Maryland, she was probably born before 1805. The Elizabeth McGough who married Colbert Amerine was born in Ohio in about 1833. An Elizabeth McGough, daughter of Henry McGough and Margaret Arnold, was baptized on September 4, 1833, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Danville, Knox county, Ohio. Sponsors were Dan Logue and Liddie [Lydia] Porter. St. Luke's records, 1829-early 1900's: Danville, Knox County, Ohio by Richard T. Koch, Phyllis I. Davidson. She was the daughter of the Henry McGough (who is listed immediately below as a brother) who married Margaret Arnold on September 13, 1831, in Mt Vernon, Knox county, Ohio. My guess is that she was the Elizabeth McGough who married Colbert Amerine on January 7, 1850, in Miami County, Ohio. If my surmise is correct, Henry McGough and Margaret Arnold named their son Colbert McGough, who was born November 10, 1851, after their son-in-law, Colbert Amerine.

The four children of Colbert Amerine and Elizabeth McGough are listed in an email of September 15, 2005 from Phyllis Goodin of Ohio:

"You have Elizabeth McGough married to Colbert Amerine in Miami County Ohio January 1850. In the 1860 census for Darke Co. OH I find a Colbert (31) and Eliza (26) Emarine* with children William H (9), Catherine (8) Harrison (3) and Marla (male-5 mo). In 1870 Franklin Co. I find Eliza (36) remarried to Nelson Loring (50) with children Harrison (13) Frank (11) Marley (11) Mary (4) and Martha (2) all listed with the family name Loring. Close by on the census are William Amerine (20) working on a farm (with a Mary McGough by the way) and Kate Emerine (17) at another residence close by working as a domestic servant. This leads me to believe that Colbert and Eliza/Elizabeth had at least 4 children together, William, Catherine, Harrison and Marley. I also have Marley's death certificate which listed Eliza McGough and Colbert Amerine as his parents. Marley is my gggrandfather. In 1880 I can only find Harrison (Harry) and Marley in Licking Co. Ohio where Marley stayed till he died. I can't find a trace of any of them after 1880 except Marley."

*The 1860 census return for Patterson, Darke county, Ohio, reports that Eliza Emarine was born in Logan county, Ohio. and that Colbert Emarine was born in Champaign county, which lies immediately south of Logan county (roll M653_956, page 545; Family History Library Film: 803956). Based on her stated age, Elizabeth's year of birth would have been 1833 or 1834.

"Colbert Amerine married Elizabeth McGough, the sister of my ggggrandfather, William Henry McGough, who named one of his sons Colbert Alpheus (probably after the baby's uncle). Elizabeth and William were children of Thomas and Sarah McGough."

"I ran across the Loring family in the 1870 Franklin Co. Montgomery Twp. Ohio census while searching for my missing Amerine ancestors.
They are listed as follows,
Nelson 50
Eliza 36*
Harrison 13
Frank 11
Marley 11
Mary 4
Martha 2

"I believe Eliza was the widow of Colbert Amerine. Harrison and Marley are Amerines but listed without surnames in this census. Their (Colbert and Eliza) older children, William and Kate are also in the 1870 Franklin Co. census as domestic servants in neighboring households. (Thanks Sean) Colbert Amerine, wife Eliza and children William, Catherine, Harrison and Marley were listed as a family in the 1860 Darke Co. OH census and the dates match with the 1870 census."

In the 1870 census of Montgomery township, Franklin county, Ohio, the birthplace of Eliza (McGough) Loring is listed as Ohio (roll M593_1200, page 635A; Family History Library Film 552699). Living next door on the farm of John J. Nelson (who owned real estate worth $46,000 and personal property worth $3,000), age 42, born in Ohio, and Rebecca Nelson, age 34, born in Ohio, was William Amerine, age 20, born in Ohio, who was working on the farm; and Mary McGough, age 18, born in Ohio, a domestic servant.

Catherine Haar suggested to me that a more likely candidate for the Elizabeth McGough who was the daughter of Thomas McGough and Sarah James is the Elizabeth McGough who married James Welsh, and may be listed thusly in the 1870 census of Bethel township, Clark county, Ohio:

(1870) James Welsh*, age 69, born in Maryland, no occcupation, owner of real estate valued at $1,000, and a personal estate worth $1500 (roll M593_1180, page 39A, line 18; Family History Library Film 552679).

Catherine Haar also called my attention to these entries in the earliest Catholic baptismal records of Ohio. "They were written and kept at the first Catholic parish in the state, St. Joseph Parish near Somerset in Perry County, but they include ceremonies conducted throughout southern, central, and eastern Ohio by the Dominican priests (and a few by diocesan priests) on their journeys through the wilderness." In the 1830 census of Reading township, Perry county, Pennsylvania, the families of John McGough (a male between 20 and 30) and James Welch, a male between 30 and 40, are listed side by side. John McGough's wife is also between 20 and 30, and James Welch's wife (Elizabeth McGough?) is between 30 and 40. The John McGough's have 2 children, a son and a daughter both under five. The James Welchs have three children, all daughters, one under 5 (Martha?), one five to ten (Mary Ann?), and one ten to fifteen (NARA roll M19–137; Family History Film: 0337948). (In 1840, John McGough is in Jackson townhip, Perry county (roll 419, page 127; Family History Library Film: 0020174), but I found no James Welch or Welsh nearby. Elizabeth McGough Dempsey (c. 1767–1855)

Elizabeth McGough, a daughter of Miles McGough and Elizabeth Spencer, was born in Harford county, Maryland, in about 1767, and married Patrick William Dempsey, probably around 1793. They had at least eleven children. The Souvenir of Loretto Centenary, page 109, records the baptism in Pennsylvania by Father Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin in 1807 through 1822 of these children of Patrick Dempsey and Elizabeth ----- : Esther, Sarah Ann, James. They moved from Harford county, Maryland, to Cambria county, Pennsylvania, before 1807, and later to Perry county, Ohio.

Several of their children were born earlier in Maryland are evidenced by this entry from the 1800 census of District 5, Harford county, Maryland: 2 (free white males under 10) 1 (free white male 10 thru 15) - 1 (free white male 25 thru 44) - 3 (free white females under 10) - 1 (free white female 16 thru 25) 1 (free white female 45 and over) (roll 11, page 126).

Elizabeth McGeough Dempsey died on July 6, 1855 (?)*, in Huntington, Huntington county, Indiana. Patrick William Dempsy died on August 1, 1846, in Huntington, Huntington county, Indiana. Another source, however, says that Elizabeth McGough Dempsey died in Perry county, Ohio.

*One source says Elizabeth died in 1835, but the 1850 census of Huntington, Indiana, shows her at age 83 living with her daughter Mary Buchanan (see below).

Their son John Dempsey was born in about 1794 in Maryland. He was married to Ann Branniff (born about 1808 in Pennsylvania), by Father Gallitzin on October 12, 1834, in St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria county, Pennsylvania. They had six children, all born in Cambria county, where John Dempsey died sometime before 1860.

A daughter of Patrick William Dempsey and Elizabeth McGough was Elizabeth Dempsey, born about 1796 in Maryland, married John A. Dimond (born about 1792 in Pennsylvania) on June 21, 1818, in St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria county; had nine children; and died in 1859 in Perry county, Ohio. [See My Elder Family Tree.] Their son, Patrick Augustine Dimond, was born on March 4, 1819, in Cambria county; married Ann McGahan (born in 1825 in Ohio) on August 8, 1843, in Perry county, Ohio; had 8 children, all born in Perry county, Ohio; and died on December 6, 1883, in Huntington, Huntington county, Indiana.

Another daughter of Patrick William Dempsey and Elizabeth McGough, Esther Dempsey, was born in Cambria county on March 26, 1807, and christened on August 14, 1808, by Father Demetrius Aloysious Gallitzin, at St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria county. Her godparents were: Henry and Sara Cooper. Esther married James MacGahan on September 19, 1841, in Perry county, Ohio. Their son James Dempsey was born on October 5, 1811, in Cambria county, Pennsylvania, and christened by Father Gallitzin on May 25, 1817, in St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria county. Godparents were Lucas McGuire, Sr., and Elizabeth Inloes. James married Sarah Ann Smith on November 4, 1838, in Perry county, Ohio.

Their other children were Catherine Dempsey, who married John Seese; Mary Dempsy, who married John Buchanan*; Rose (or Rosanna) Dempsy, who married Joseph Buchanan on July 6, 1828, in Perry county, Ohio; Sarah Anna Dempsey, who was christened on October 16, 1814, at St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria county; Patrick Dempsey, who died in December, 1861, at Camp Pierpont, Virginia, while a resident of Cambria county and serving as member of Company A, 11th Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry.

*Here is an excerpt from an email posted on Gen Forum by Regina Gonnella on August 14, 2002 (Re: Oscar McGough, Summerhill, Pa):

"I found more information about Patrick Dempsey and Elizabeth McGough.

"I found Elizabeth was born about 1767. She was living with her daughter, Mary Dempsey Buchanan, in Huntington Co., Indiana in 1850. Her age is given as 83 and her birthplace is Maryland. This is the first time I have found her on the census. Her daughter, Mary, was also listed as born in Maryland. Elizabeth's daughter, Rose, was living in Huntington Co., Indiana also. She gave her birthplace as Maryland.

[The 1850 census of Huntington, Huntington county, Indiana, lists Elizabeth Demey (sic), age 83, born in Maryland, living with John Buchanan, age 53, sheriff, born in Pennsyvania, and his wife, Mary A. Buchanan, age 52, born in Maryland, with 7 children, the 5 oldest of whom, age 24 through 17, were born in Ohio, and the 2 youngest of whom, ages 12 and 10, were born in Indiana (M-432, roll 152. page 39, line 30).

In the 1820 census of Pennsylvania, there is a Patrick Dempsey listed in Somerset county, Shade township, with 1 male over 45, 1 female 26 to 45, 3 males 16 to 26, 2 females 10 to 16, and 1 male under 10. 4 of the persons in this family were foreigners who were not naturalized. Somerset county is immediately south of Cambria county.

Mark O'Neill, in O'Neill Ancestry, lists the children of Patrick Dempsey and Elizabeth McGough as follows:

# Elizabeth DEMPSEY b: ABT 1796 (married John A. Dimond on June 21, 1818, in St Michaels, Loretto, Cambria County, PA., 9 children.) (Ledoux, volume 1, page 148).
