[Here is a biography of Silas A. McGough from Twentieth Century History of Altoona and Blair County, Pennsylvania, and Representative Citizens, by Jesse C. Sell, Chicago, IL: Richmond-Arnold, 1911:
"SILAS A. McGOUGH, proprietor of the Hotel Belmar, which is situated on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Fifteenth Street, Altoona, is a well known and highly respected citizen and an experienced hotel man. He was born July 25, 1836, at Loretto, Cambria County, Pa., a son of James and Margaret McGough. His grandfather on the paternal side was Arthur McGough.
"The subject of this sketch was one of a large family, namely: Ellen, George, Susan, Charles, Anna, James, Silas A., Andrew, Demetrius, and Margaret. He was reared and educated in Cambria County and during a large portion of his life has been engaged in the hotel business. For the past 31 years he has been a resident of Altoona, and for one year conducted the City Hotel, and for three years the Windsor Hotel, while for the past five years he has been proprietor of the Hotel Belmar. While this is not the largest hotel in the city it is one of the most comfortable and most favorably located, and the quality of the service furnished is such as to give satisfaction to the guests and build up the patronage of the hotel, which is very favorably known to the traveling public.
"Mr. McGough was married in 1865 to Miss Rufina Harbor, who died in 1866, leaving one child, Harriet. His second marriage took place in 1868, to Miss Mary R. Wharton, and of this union there have been the following children: Edwin, Georgia, Henry O., Arthur, Margaret, Frances, Zoe, Elmer, Ralph, Jessie, Cyril, Frederick and Donald, all of whom have been given good educational advantages.
"In politics Mr. McGough is a Republican and for four years and a half he served in the office of chief of police of Altoona, his administration resulting in some important reforms, and during which law and order were thoroughly enforced. Mr. McGough and his family are members of the Catholic church."]

Here is a posting by Jim Keilman on the McGough Board on Ancestry.com on October 30, 2006, on the subject Pius, Sarah, Magdelen McGough Update:
"I've read the information provided in the magoo.com: McGoughs McGoughs and McGues in the 1900 Census of ... Cambria County, Carroll Township. The census record is accurate but there seems to be some confusion about Sarah and Magdelen.
"Sarah McGough (Dumm) b. December 25-1879 d. January 13-1936 was the wife of Joseph McGough b. March 7-1879 d. May 27-1961. (Joseph's birth year on his tombstone is wrong).
"The confusion with Sarah is that she used her nickname "Sadie" on many of the records found for her including her Marriage Application to Joseph and Birth Certificates for some children. However on her funeral arrangment records her name is stated as Sarah. A Grand-Daughter named after her was Sarah, and when she and Joseph stood for the christening of a grandchild her name was Sara (Mispelled). The information provided has been verified.
"Simon McGough was the father of Joseph McGough and Pius McGough b. 1881 possibly March d. March 20-1956 (corrected from March 29). Simon's wife was Margret Hershel who after the death of Simon and before her second marrige to John A Trinkley appears to change her name to Magdelen. She is buried under the name of Magdelen Trinkley in the St Mary/St George/Queen of Peace Cemetery, Clearfield Township, Cambria County, PA beside her second husband John A Trinkley. Though she used the name Magdelen while married to John A Trinkley, her name stated on her Death Certificate is again Margret and her birth is stated as Unknown. The above book states that she was born in 1848 howver she died on November 14-1913 at age 53. making her birth year at 1860.
"Pius is also buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave and possibly in the Trinkley Family Plot. However the cemetery records of 1956 were poorly kept and no record of which plot Pius is in is available. Nothing to verify the death of Simon has yet been found."]

McGough (1827-1870) and Isabella Plummer (1834-1911). Charles' mother, the widowed Isabel (Plummer) McGough, age 36, is listed in the 1870 census of Croyle township, Cambria county, with three children, all born in Pennsylvania: Daniel A. McGough, age 14; Charles B. McGough, age 11; and George McGough, age 8. In 1920, Charles had passed his 61st birthday. The listing of his age as 57 in the 1920 census caused me some embarassment when I confused him with a member of a different family, Charles C. McGough, the son of Charles C. McGough and Margaret Nagle, who was born in Summit, Cresson township, Cambria county (just west of the border with Blair county), on February 1, 1863, baptized on February 8, 1863, in St. Augustine Parish (Ledoux IV #6822), and who is listed with his parents as age 16, a laborer, in the 1880 census of Logan, Blair county, Pennsylvania; and as age 7, the 5th of 8 children, in the 1870 census of White township, Cambria county. (1900) Andrew McGeogh, age 44, born in December, 1855, in Scotland, to parents born in Ireland, married 15 years, emigrated to US in 1884, 15 years in the US, weaver, owner of home in which he was living on Spanger Street. (T-623, roll 1470, book 2, page 5a, line 72). Indexed by Ancestor.com as McGeorgie. [Here is an email of December 9, 2005, from Nancy Collier: "My grandmother's aunt Anna Byrne was married to an Andrew McGeough in Phila in 1893 (I live in suburban Phila). Her husband is in your record of 1900 census Phila Ward 28 with his third wife Mary and all then children by his three marriages." This data is not consistent with information on this same family in the 1910 and 1920 censuses, but Nancy Collier has convincing evidence that Mary McGeogh, the wife listed in this census, was not the mother of the oldest son, Lawrence McGeogh.* Andrew McGeogh is listed in the 1910 census of Philadelphia (renting at 136 Stanton Street in the 38th Ward), age 50, born in Scotland to parents born in Ireland, married once—for twenty years to his wife Mary. He was working as a weaver in a carpet mill. He is shown to have emigrated in 1884. His wife Mary is shown as age 42, married once—for twenty years. Mary is shown to have emigrated in 1886, and was the mother of 10 children, 7 of whom were living. Their seven living children, all born in Pennsylvania, were living with their parents: Raymond, age 16; James, age 15; and Madeline, age 13; Peter, age 7; Bernard, age 5; John, age 2; and Andrew, age 11 months. Also living with them in 1910 was Andrew's sister-in-law (and presumably Mary's sister), Annie Hughes, age 32, born in Ireland, who emigrated in 1903. In the 1920 census of the 38th Ward of Philadelphia, Andrew is listed as Andrew McGeough, living on Ridge Avenue, age 60, born in Ireland, who emigrated in 1885 and was naturalized in 1890. Andrew was still working as a weaver in a carpet mill. Living with him were his wife, Mary, age 61, born in Ireland; sons Peter, age 15, and John, age 10, and daughter Florence, age 6.]
Mary McGeogh, age 36, born in Ireland in March, 1864, mother of five children, all of whom were living, emigrated to US in 1884, 15 years in the US. [Mary Hughes, Andrew's third wife. The manifest of the S.S. Merion, which had sailed from Liverpool on October 6, 1909, and arrived in Philadelphia on October 20, 1909, lists Katie Hughes, whose fare had been paid by her sister, as age 28, single, and a servant. Her last permanent residence was listed as Moville (probably should be Crossmaglen), Ireland, where her nearest relative was her brother, James Hughes; her final destination was Philadelphia. The manifest says that Katie had been born in Culloville, Ireland (county Armagh), that she had been in Philadelphia previously for a 2 year period, and that she was going to join her sister, Mrs. Mary McGough, at 136 Stanton Street, Falls of Schuylkill, Philadelphia. Katie was listed as 5' 3", with a fair complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. Katie's name has been crossed out on the manifest. (Philadelphia Passenger Lists, 1800–1945, microfilm roll T840_70). The same Katie Hughes, now age 29, a domestic servant, arrived in Philadelphia on June 13, 1910, aboard the S. S. Haverford from Liverpool. She listed as her permanent residence Cappy, Crossmaglen, and her nearest relative there, her brother James Hughes. She had been in Philadelphia previously for 2 years to 1907. She was going to join her sister, Annie Hughes, at 136 Stanton Street, Falls of Schuylkill, Philadelphia. Her place of birth is shown as Crossmaglen (Philadelphia Passenger Lists, 1800–1945, microfilm roll T840_79).]

Reginia McGeogh, age 9 months, born in Pennsylvania, September, 1899. [Daughter of Andrew's third wife, Mary Hughes.]
*[Nancy Collier has convinced me that, despite the census information, Andrew McGeogh was married three times. She was kind enough to furnish me this additional information:
"It is my firm belief , supported by many facts, that the 1910 census is somewhat incorrect (the number of years married etc.). I know this is our Andrew McGeough because our cousin Madeline had two full brothers named Raymond and James. Until I started this genealogy stuff I didn't know the names of her father's two other wives nor of her half brothers and sisters.
"Here are some facts from my database regarding Andrew's marriages: According to an interview given by his daughter Mad (Madeline), her father was married three times. (Madeline was my grandmother's first cousin.....daughter of Anna Byrne McGeough Andrew's second wife).
"First Marriage: at the time of his marriage to Mad's mother (in 1893) his marriage record says he was married once before and marriage was "dissolved by death" January 1891. (his first wife was a Mary Dogherty per the baptismal record of her son Lawrence. (I have church record)...they may have been married abt 1886-1887 based on Lawrence's birth ... Lawrence was born Jan 1888 baptized Feb 1888)
"Second Marriage: On March 18, 1893 he filed an application to marry Annie Byrns (should be Byrne) . On April 5, 1893 they were married at St Bridget's Catholic Church in Phila. I have info from the church record. It also states that Andrew was originally from Scotland and Ann Byrne originally from Ireland.
"Third Marriage: Apparently married his third wife Mary Hughes(?) some time in 1898... his wife Annie died April 18 1898 and in the 1910 census Andrew had a daughter Regina born Sept 1899.... this would put his marriage to Mary Hughes mid to late 1898."]
