McGoughs in Iowa in the 1900 Census of the United States and the 1915 State Census of Iowa |
Most of the McGoughs/McGeoughs on this page are descendants or relatives of Bernard McGough and Catherine Kernaghan, who emigrated from Ireland to Ontario, Canada, in 1832; to Winnebago, Illinois in 1852; and to Allamakee county, Iowa, in about 1852. For more of the history of this family, see my page: Bernard McGough and Catherine Kernaghan of Lindsay, Ontario, and Allamakee County, Iowa.
This page is a substitute for the Iowa section of my page: McGoughs and McGues in the 1900 Census of the United States. I have also included here a table of the McGoughs in the 1915 state census of Iowa, and references to McGoughs and McGeoughs in Iowa cemetery transcriptions. I have also included reference to several sources of Iowa history and genealogy.

The McGoughs originally settled in Iowa in Allamakee county. Members of the family later moved on to Hardin and Franklin counties, but the majority stayed in Allamakee county. These references. therefore, are weighted toward Allamakee county.
Devereux = McGeough—The Story of an Irish Family by Phyllis McGeough Devereux (Garden Grove California 1992). (The book is available at the Family History Library (FHL FAM HIST Book, call number 929.273 M173d). This family genealogy of mostly Iowa McGoughs is the result of twenty years of effort by Phyllis Devereux—and was completed before censuses and other Iowa records became available on the Internet. The result of her persistent research rates high in accuracy and completeness. The Iowa records show a trend toward adding an e to McGough, beginning in about 1880. Families whose name was more often McGough in records before 1900 often became McGeoughs in 20th century records. In her family history, Devereux does not attempt to differentiate the spellings, and in her genealogical charts always shows the name as McGeough:
"There were several McGeough family given names that proved to be very popular and were used over and over again. As the family increased in number and many had the same first and last names, it became confusing in a legal sense. It is said that an attorney suggested some should change the spelling, so those living on one side of the river dropped the 'e' from the McGeough name. (For purposes of this book, I have not tried to determine family spellings of the name, and have spelled them all with an 'e')." Devereux, page 49.

Here are all the McGeoughs and McGoughs I found in Iowa Cemetery Transcriptions. No one is listed as a McGough in Allamakee county, but all are listed as McGoughs in Hardin county.
For a combined list of all the McGeough burials in all the Allamakee county cemeteries, see Allamakee County Iowa Burial Grounds 1845–1988, Index: Mc - Me Surnames, part of Allamakee County Cemetery Records, part of the valuable Sharyl's Cabin website — which is word searchable and full of information on McGeough families in Allamakee county, mostly after 1900.
Cherry Mound Cemetery, Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa—from Allamakee County Iowa Burial Grounds by Dale P. Woodmansee, Waukon, Iowa—lists these McGeoughs. Abbreviations are explained at Woodmansee Abbreviations. "The Cherry Mound Cemetery is on the grounds of St. Pius Catholic Church located on an improved road one mile northeast of its intersection with State Highway 76 eleven miles southeast of Waukon, Iowa."

There are three McGough gravestones in the Cherry Mound Cemetery, not indexed as such by Woodmansee:
Bernard McGough (1803–1890). The gravestone says that Bernard McGough, a native of county Monaghan, Ireland, did on June 18, 1890, aged 81 years. This would make the probably year of his birth as 1803.
Catharine McGough (1809–1867), wife of Bernard McGough. [Catharine Kernaghan or Kieran]
Margaret McGough (1845–1866), who died on April 18, 1866, at the age of 21; daughter of Ann Downing (1804–February 4, 1901,at the age of 97, whose name is above Margaret McGough's on the same gravestone. Wife of John McGough, the son of Bernard McGough (1803–1891) and Catharine Kernaghan (or Kiernan) (1809–1867), and who was born in Lindsay, Ontario, on November 1, 1832.
A comparison of Woodmansee's list (above) with the compilation of Allamakee McGeoughs on the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project reveals some differences.
