Mary F. Burris, age 51, born in August, 1848, in Ohio, to parents born in Ohio, married 23 years, mother of 8 children, 7 living. [Mary Francis Rebecca Burris died in Mt. Vernon, Knox county, Ohio, on April 16, 1915. Her death certificate says that she was born on August 5, 1848, and that her parents were John McGough and Margaret McKinzie McGough, both of whom were born in Pennsylvania. The informant was Mary's husband, Leonard Burris of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Mary was buried in Mound View Cemetery on April 19, 1915. Most sources show her parents to be Henry McGough (1805–1856) and Margaret Arnold (1812–1856). For example, see Leonard Burris on these Family Trees on Ancestry.co: Anderson, Nein/Foor, Wendlandt Kloch. Ernsberger, Huffman and related families, however, shows Mary's parents to be John McGough (1805–1856) and Margaret McKinzie (1812–1900), reflecting the death certificate that I believe to be erroneous.

[Margaret McGough, the mother in law, died in Newark, Ohio, on June 12, 1901. Here is the obituary that appeared on page 6 of the Newark Daily Advocate (Newark, Ohio) on Wednesday, June 12, 1901:

"Mrs. M'GoughWho Suffered a Stroke of Paralysis Tuesday Died Early Wednesday Morning, Age 88

"Mrs. Margaret McGough, widow of Henry McGough, died at the home of her son Thomas, corner Railroad and First Street, at about one o'clock on Wednesday morning, age 88 years.

"During Tuesday morning, Mrs. McGough suffered a stroke of paralysis and owing to her extreme age she failed to rally. There are seven children who survive. They are W. H. and C. A. McGough of Van Wert county, Mrs. Ann Riley of Conroy, Mrs. Mary F. Burris of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. Rachel Green of Gahenna, John R. of Ludlow, Ky., and Thomas McGough of this city.

"The funeral will take place at 9 o'clock Friday morning from St. Francis de Sales church."

Follow-up articles in the Newark Daily Advocate of June 14, 1901, and June 19, 1901, also refer to Mary F. Burris as the daughter of Margaret McGough. The latter article, on page six, noted that Margaret McGough was the mother of 15 children, 7 of whom survived her; 62 grandchildren; and 55 great-grandchildren. All the articles are available on Ancestry.com.

The son living in Newark, referred to in the obituary as Thomas McGough, was formally named Elias Thomas McGough, and is listed above as E. F. McGough in the 1900 census of Newark, Licking county. (Newark is 25 miles south of Mt. Vernon.)

This obituary makes it clear that the death certificate of Mary F. Burris incorrectly names her parents. I have been unable to find any explanation of the mistake. Mary B. Burris was the fourth of twelve children of Henry McGough and Margaret Arnold. Her younger sister, Elsie B. Arnold, who was born on September 13, 1813 (who died on July 21, 1904), and who was the fifth child, married James McKenzie on April 10, 1833. (posting on April 5, 2002, on the Arnold Family Genealogy Forum (page 32) by Katie Arnold—Re: Elias Arnold m. Rachel Payne; St. Luke's Records). (A daughter, Rebecca McKenzie, was baptized on July 30, 1837; a son, Jonathan David McKenzie, was born on November 1, 1839, and a daughter, Rachel Susanna McKenzie, on January 1, 1842. St. Luke's Records). There was a John McGough who is listed as the father of two children born to Mary Burris, and later to have married an Elizabeth Burris, and this may have helped to confuse Leonard Burris. St. Luke's Records 1829-early 1900's, Register of Baptisms, page 116, shows Elizabeth McGough, born on February 7, 1877, and Henry McGough, born March 18, 1880, both children of John McGough and Mary Burris, were baptized on July 18, 1886. The St. Luke's records also show that John McGough married Elizabeth Burris on November 4, 1886, and that Thomas Bernard McGough, born on May 23, 1888, son of John McGough and Elizabeth Burris, was baptized on June 10, 1888. The same records show that, on August 28, 1887, John McGough and Margaret McGough sponsored the baptism of Charles Arnold (born January 20, 1887), son of Francis Arnold and Frances (?) Slusser.]

The 1900 census return also lists 7 children in the home of Leonard and Mary F. Burris: Thomas S. 22, Harley C. 18, Otto N. 16, John G. 14, Charles C. 14, Fannie R. 12, and Chaney V. 12.
