Patrick McGough (boarder), age 23, born in August, 1876, in Ireland, emigrated in 1900, 2 months in US, Pa, day laborer. [This is the Patrick McGough, age 23, a laborer from Crossmaglen, who arrived in New York City on March 22, 1900, aboard the S. S. Teutonic from Liverpool, according to the Ellis Island website. The ship's manifest shows his destination as Elmira, New York. Listed next to his name on the manifest is Michael McGough, age 24, also a laborer from Crossmaglen, whose destination is his uncle Patrick McGough on "Market Street, Almira, N. Y." [This Patrick McGough is listed in the 1870 census of the town of LaFayette, Onondaga county, New York, living with his older brother, James McGeough. Patrick McGough of 761 East Market Street, Elmira, New York, age 73, returned to the US from Liverpool aboard the S. S. Caronia on October 14, 1922. His name is crossed out on the manifest of the same ship's arrival on September, 8, 1923. Both manifests say that he was naturalized in 1873 in Plattsburgh, Clinton county.] [On May 5, 1904, James McGough, age 23, single, a laborer, who resided in Dundalk (county Monaghan), Ireland, arrived at the Port of New York aboard the Teutonic from Liverpool. His destination was the home of his uncle, Pat McGough, 377 Railroad Avenue, Chumleigh, Elmira, New York. Ellis Island website. Patrick McGough is not in the 1880 census of Elmira, and he probably arrived after that census was taken. In the 1920 census of Elmira, Patrick W. McGough, age 69, born in Ireland, married, with no occupation stated, was a boarder in the home of Thomas and Lina Stratton on Market Street, with no occupation listed (T-625, page 1092, page 5A, line 45). Patrick McGough applied for a passport in Chemung county, New York, oon June 9, 1923. The application states that he was born in Ireland on March 13, 1850; that his father was Michael McGough; that he emigrated to the United States from Liverpool, Engand, on about February 1, 1868; that he had resided uninterruptedly in the United States for 55 years from 1868 to 1923 at Elmira, New York; and that he had been naturalized as a citizen of the United States before the County Court of the county of Clinton at Attone, New York, on June 9, 1873. He was retired and intended to visit England and Ireland. He intended to leave from the Port of New York aboard the Caroma (?) on June 30, 1873. buried: St Peter & Paul Cemetery, Elmira, NYPatrick William McGough was born in the Donaghmoyne Parish of County Monaghan in 1849, and emigrated to America around 1880. His older brothers, James McGough and John McGough had emigrated in the late 1850's and were living between Chemung and Onondaga Counties in upstate New York. Patrick opened up a grocery, saloon, and hotel at 763 Market Street in Elmira, and first appeared in the Elmira City Directory in 1885 as a laborer living at that same address.
He married Margaret Halloran in 1882 at St. Patricks Church, Elmira, New York.
Patrick and Margaret had 3 children: Mary Catherine, John James, and Thomas Henry.
Patrick's brother, Peter McGeough, sent his two oldest sons, Michael and Patrick to live in Elmira in 1900. They lived at the home of Dennis and Kate Sullivan just down the street from their uncle at 913 Market Street. Michael and Patrick lived with John James and Thomas Henry sharing residences over the next three years at different locations throughout the city.
Patrick McGough, a naturalized US citizen, applied for a passport in Elmira, Chemung county, New York, on June 9, 1923. his application states that he was born in Ireland on March 13, 1850; that his father was Michael McGough; that when he emigrated to the US, he sailed from Liverpool on about February 1, 1868; that he then resided in the US at Elmira, New York, for 55 years from 1868 to 1923; that he was retired; and that he was naturalized at Altona, Clinton county, New York, on June 9, 1873. He intended to make a four month visit to England and Ireland and depart from the port of New york aboard the Coama (built in 1891by A. Stephens & Sons, Glasgow), scrapped in 1925) on June 30, 1923.
Patrick's daughter, Mary Catherine married John F. Goode of Boston, Massachusetts.
John James worked in several different occupations including as a mill operator at a knitting mill; bartender in his father's saloon; and then moved to Hartford, Connecticut for work in the early 1920's. He eventually moved back to New York and settled in Montour Falls, NY.
Thomas Henry was a glass cutter and as a machinist. He married Clare Cain in 1909, a bookeeper, at St. Peter & Paul's Church in Elmira. They moved to Detroit, Michigan in the early 1920's.
Patrick died of a diabetic seizure in Binghamton, New York at the house of his nephew, James McGough. He was 78 years old. His obituary read as follows:
Elmira Star Gazette: May 29, 1927:
Patrick W. McGough died Saturday at the home of his nephew, James McGough in Binghamton. He was in business for many years at 763 East Market Street, Elmira and had many friends in this city.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. John F. Goode of Boston, Mass.; two sons, John J. of Hartford, Conn. and T. Henry of Detroit, Mich.; and five grandchildren. The funeral was held at the SS.Peter and Paul's Church Tuesday morning; ........The pall bearers were six nephews of the decendent. Burial was in the SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

The 1920 census of Binghamton lists James as age 38, born in Ireland, who immigrated in 1905 and was naturalized in 1912, a truckman for a railroad company, living with his wife Anna McGough, age 33, born in Ireland, who immigrated in 1888, and two childen: Peter McGough, age 9, born in New York, and Anna McGough, age 7, born in New York. (T-625, roll 1086, page 10A, line 20). James' wife was probably Anna Ryan, daughter of William Ryan and Anna Tabin. "Anna Ryan (b. 1883, d. 14 Mar 1962) — Anna Ryan (daughter of William Ryan and Anna Tabin) was born 1883 in Salbank*, Ireland, and died 14 Mar 1962 in Binghamton, NY. *The name of a townland in Ireland that is closest to Salbank is Castlebank in county Clare, St. Patrick's parish, barony of Bunratty Lower, poor law union of Limerick, and province of Munster.
[The 1920 census of Binghamton, Broome county, New York, showed that Owen McGough and his family were living in the same house as his brother, James McGough. Owen McGough was the head of his own family who was paying rent to James, age 29, born in Ireland, who immigrated in 1916, who was working as a splitter in a shoe factory; Owen's wife, Catherine McGough, age 25, born in Ireland, who had also emigrated in 1912; a daughter, Mary, age 5, born in New York, and a son, Andrew, age 3, born in New York. In the 1930 census of Binghamton, Owen is listed as Owen McGoff, age 41, born in Northern Ireland, with a home worth $6500, who was married at age 25, emigrated in 1909, was naturalized, a tanner in a shoe factory, living with his wife, Katie, age 37, married at age 19, born in Northern Ireland, and four children, all listed as born in Northern Ireland: Mary E. McGoff, age 15; Eugene McGoff, age 13; Francis McGoff, age 7; and Jack McGoff, age 6. Also in the household was a cousin, Dennis Clarey, age 30, born in Northern Ireland, who had immigrated in 1924, and who was employed as a checker on a steam railroad (roll 1407, page: 5A, line 16).

Michael and Patrick McGough arrived in New York City together on March 22, 1900, aboard the Teutonic from Liverpool. The ship's manifest lists Michael as age 24, and Patrick as age 23, both as laborers whose last residence was Crossmaglen, with the common destination of "Uncle Pat McGough, Market St., Almira (sic)." Almira is correctly spelled Elmira in another place on the manifest. Michael and John had each paid their own fare. "Michael married Josephine 'Johanna'" Dillon at St. Patricks Church, Elmira, New York on January 12, 1904." www.IrishMcGoff.com. The 1910 census of Elmira lists Michael McGough, age 39, born in Ireland, a policeman or a steam railroad, who emigrated in 1900, and who owned his home subject to a mortgage; with his wife of 6 years, Johanna, age 38, born in Ireland, who emigrated in 1892, mother of 2 children, both living; with their daughter, Anna, age 4, born in New York, and son, Peter, age 2, born in New York (T-624, roll 931, page 9A, line31). Michael McGough died in Elmira, New York, at the age of 96 on March 6, 1970. His wife, Johanna (Dillon) McGough died in Elmira at the age of 82 on August 26, 1958. McGough, age 30, born in Ireland, who emigrated in 1900 and was a naturalized citizen, a laborer in a brewery, who owned his home subject to a mortgage, married 2 years, living with his wife, Margaret McGough, age 28, born in Ireland, who emigrated in 1906, mother of 2 chilren, both living; and 2 daughters, both born in New York: Helen McGough, age 2, and Catherine McGough, age 1 month (T-624, roll 931, page 2B, line 88). Patrick J. McGough died in Elmira, New York, at the age of 76 on February 11, 1955. His wife, Margaret T. McGough died in Elmira at the age of 56 on January 14, 1941. Both are buried in Plot #63 in St Peter and Paul's Cemetery. [This is John Joseph McGeough, son of Arthur McGeough and Sarah Smith, of the townland of Mullaghselsana, parish of Errigal Trough, county of Monaghan, Ireland. See line 383 in my table in McGoughs, McGeoughs, and McGeoghs in Ireland in the 1820–30s and 1850–60s: By County, Parish, and Townland. The marriage of John McGeough and Bridget Moan was solemnized on February 2, 1875, in the Roman Catholic chapel of Urbleshanny in the registrar's district of Scotstown in county Monaghan. John McGeough was a farmer, residing in Mullaghselsana at the home of his father, Arthur McGeough, who was also a farmer. Bridget Moan was from Killalough (Killylough), and "of full age." Her father was Patrick Moan. Her mother's maiden name was Catherine Conley, according to a One World Family Tree on Ancestry.com. The officiating priest was James Callan, and the witnesses were Patrick Moan and James Donnelly (email of Jamie Bush Clark on March 24, 2002). According to a family tree furnished me by Daniel McGeough of Seattle (John McGeough's great-great grandson), John died in Brooklyn in 1901. [According to the family tree, Arthur McGeough was born in Clara, county Monaghan, on February 25, 1879, married Josephine Looney, and died in Brooklyn on October 18, 1920. His widow, Josephine Looney McGeough, who was born on April 19, 1881, is listed as Josephine McGough, age 33, a widow, in the 1920 census of Silver Bow, Butte county, Montana. She is listed in the home of her sister, Anna Cronin, age 38, born in Ireland, who emigrated in 1906, and brother in law, Robert A. Cronin, age 43, born in Ireland. With her were her two sons, Arthur McGough (sic), 2 years and 10 months, born in New York, and John, 1 year, 3 months, born in New York (roll T625_976, page 6B). Josephine McGeough, age 43, born in Ireland, a widow, is listed in the 1930 census of Silver Bow, Butte, Montana, with her two sons, Arthur, aged 12, and John, age 11 (roll 1262, page 3B). Josephine died in Seattle, Washington on November 29, 1967. The grandson of Arthur and Josephine McGeough, Daniel McGeough, who gave me the family tree, was born in Seattle, Washington, on October 28, 1955. Daniel was the son of John Patrick McGeough, who was born in Brooklyn on September 23, 1918, and Ida Mattila (daughter of John and Lizzi Matilla who emigrated from Finland in 1903 and 1905), who was born in Black Diamond (Hobart precinct, King county) Washington, on June 9, 1914.
[Daniel's father, John Patrick McGeough, died in Seattle on September 21, 2011, at the age of 93. Here is his obituary that was published in The Seattle Times from Friday, September 23 to Sunday, September 25, 2011 (on page B4):
"John Patrick McGEOUGH
Beloved father and husband joined our mother in eternal life with Our Lord Jesus Christ on September 21, 2011, in Seattle Washington. Born in Brooklyn, New York, September 23, 1918 to Arthur and Josephine McGeough.
Preceded in death by his wife Ida (1982) and daughter Margaret (Peggy) Hetherington (2005).
He is survived by his children Madelon Nesbit (Bob), Mary, Daniel (Sandi), his foster daughter Sally Mollica, grand children Jason Hetherington (Melissa), Mariana Hetherington, Renee McGeough, Jeime Kicey (Russ) and Kevin Carriveau and great grandchildren, Taylor and Connor Hetherington, Kyliea and Kynzi Kicey and many nephews and nieces.
He spent his early childhood in Butte, Montana moving to Seattle in 1932 graduating from Seattle Prep (1936 Golden Panther Member) and the UW School of Forestry. He joined the CCC working on many projects in Washington, was a US Merchant Marine, then was drafted into the US Army. He worked for the City of Seattle at the Seattle Transit System and Seattle Engineering Department retiring 12/31/80. He was a longtime member of St. Alphonsus Parish where he was involved with the Parish finance committee, past president of the Holy Names Society, Eucharistic Ministry and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
In retirement he traveled and enjoyed dancing. He dedicated his life to his Family and Faith. Recitation of the Rosary will be Monday, September 26th, at 10:30 AM followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, BOTH at St. Alphonsus Church, 5816 15th Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107. ..."]
