Inconsistent Census Reporting |
If the American spelling of McGough were to conform to the pronunciation carried to America from county Monaghan, it should probably be Mag Yeohee. Many US census takers, after hearing the name pronounced by non-English-speaking immigrants, have recorded the name as McGue. Although the name, in that form, does not appear in Irish records, many American families have simplified their lives by spelling the name phonetically—McGue. Others have surrendered to the misperception that the name is related to the English or Welsh surname—Gough, and begun to pronounce and spell their family name as McGoff. In American public records, the spelling of the surname has countless variations, including not only McGue, McGoff, and McGeough (which is becoming more common in Ireland), but McGaugh, McGow, Magough, Magoff, Megeough, McGouch, and many others. The marriage of my great-grandfather, John McGough, is recorded as that of John McGeoy. He is listed in the 1860 census of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as John McGue. The surname of the Robert McGough family is recorded as McGaugh in the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Perry county, Alabama, but is recorded correctly as McGough in the 1850 census of Union parish, Louisiana.
Even when the surname is correctly spelled on the census return, it is often not indexed correctly by Ancestry.com. For example, in the 1940 census of Seattle, Washington, my father's name is listed as Richard T. McGough. Ancestry.com inexplicably indexes McGough as McGovan. My uncle, Justin Hugh McGough, is indexed by Ancestry.com as Justin H. McGaugh in the 1930 census of Duluth, St. Louis county, Minnesota, although his surname is properly recorded on the census return as McGough. Another of my father's brothers, Edmund Patrick McGough, is listed as Edmund McGaugh in the 1930 census of Cloquet, Carlton county, Minnesota, and is also indexed as McGaugh.
Census reports are not always reliable sources for the spelling of family names. For example, the 1860 census return of Milan township, Erie county, Ohio, in the same document, spelled the surname of the Irish-immigrant parents as Hugh and Mary Gough, and the surname of all their children as McGough—perhaps misapplying the Gaelic rule that Mac, now usually abbreviated as Mc, means son of. (Nic means daughter of.) In a few cases, a census enumerator reported the McGough surname as MacGough, thus making it invisible to a computer search for McGough. For example, in the 1900 census of Fall River, Bristol county, Massachusetts, the return lists Arthur MacGough (and is indexed by Ancestry.com only under Mac) although the surname is reported as McGough in the 1880 and 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses. A more egregious error was the reporting the name of William B. McGough as William Mcguah in the 1850 census of Walker county, Alabama. Another William McGough was listed as William McGaufh (and indexed by Ancestry.com as McGaugh) in the 1850 census of Attala county, Mississippi.
Mac (now usually Mc) had become a part of fixed Irish surnames by the end of the 11th century, and the form of a surname has seldom varied from generation to generation since that time. See my page on Spelling of McGough. In the 1860 and later censuses of Ohio, the surnames of all members of the Hugh and Mary McGough family became McGue. The surname originated in Ulster. McGue is a close approximation of the common pronunciation in Ulster of McGough. In other parts of Ireland, especially county Mayo and the south of Ireland, McGoff or McGuff seem to be more common pronunciations than McGue. Our immediate family has always pronounced the name McGue and, in the United States, our family name has often appeared as McGue in censuses, directories, and other documents— especially in the nineteenth century. In Ireland, the name has been spelled McGough, McGeough, McGeogh, and more rarely McGoff, but almost never McGue—and all these versions of the name has been occsionally spelled with a Mac.
The 1880 census of Peoria, Peoria county, Illinois, lists Owen McGoe, age 50, born in Ireland (T-9, roll 241, page 230, line 33; Family History Film 1254241). He is listed in the 1900 census of Peoria as Owen McGeogh, age 77. In the 1870 census of the township of Ladore, Neosha county, Kansas, the surname of the Phillip McGough family is spelled McGoe. A descendant says that the family pronounced the name McGoe. In earlier and later censuses, the surname is spelled McGough.
Lawrence McGoe, age 28, born in Ireland, is listed in the 1860 census of of the town of Sheldon, Franklin county, Vermont. He is listed as Lawrence Mague in the 1870 census and Lawrence McGue in the 1880 census of Fairfield (about 5 miles south of Sheldon), Franklin county. His son, who is listed as Patrick Mague, age 2, in the 1870 census, and Patrick McGue, age 13, in the 1880 census, may be the Patsy McGough listed in the 1900 census of Montgomery, Franklin county, Vermont, as age 31, born in November, 1868, in Vermont, to parents born in Ireland, married 8 years, who was employed as a fireman. Montgomery is about 20 miles east of Sheldon. The surnames of Lawrence's sons John and Patrick were spelled McGue in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses of Fairfield, Franklin county, Vermont.
In the 1850 census of Irish Hollow precinct, Jo Daviess county, Illinois, the surnames of the brothers John and Peter McGough and their families are listed (and indexed) as Gough. John is listed as John M Gough. Later censuses all say McGough. See my page: John and Peter McGough—Two Brothers in Jo Daviess County, Illinois.
In the 1880 census of Albany (8th ward), Albany county, New York, the name of Peter McGeough is recorded as McGaough; and the name of Patrick McGeough is recorded as McGowgh. (Both Peter and Patrick had emigrated from county Armagh—probably Crossmaglen—and may have been cousins.)
In the 1870 census of East Portland, Multnomah county, Oregon, the family of B. McCough is listed. The same family is correctly listed under Bernard McGough in the 1880 census of Pioneer township, Boise county, Idaho. Mary McGough, the widow of Bernard McGough, is listed in the 1900 census of Silver City, Owyhee county, Idaho. In the 1900 census of Hardin township, Hardin county, Iowa, the name of Francis McGough was mistakenly reported (and indexed) as McCough (See my page: McGoughs in Iowa in the 1900 Census of the United States and the 1915 State Census of Iowa.)
McGough is misspelled as McGouch fairly frequently. For example, the Michael McGouch who is listed in the 1880 census of Shenandoah, Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, is the son of Terrence McGough who is listed in the 1870 census of St. Clair, Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, and is listed as Michael McGough the 1900 census of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Samuel McGough is listed as Samuel Mc Gouch in the 1880 census of Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania; he is listed as S. S. McGuff in the 1870 census of Pittsburgh (17th ward). Michael McGough is listed under McGough in the 1900 census of Oswego, New York; but is listed as Michael McGouch in the 1870 census of Oswego, and Michael McGeogh in the 1880 census of Oswego. Sometimes McGouch is nothing more than an error by an indexer. For example, the surname of William H. McGough is clearly spelled McGough in the 1880 census return of Dublin township, Mercer county, Ohio, but nevertheless indexed by Ancestry.com as McGouch.
In the 1860 census of Burtchville, St. Clair county, Michigan, William McClaugh and William McGoff were living side by side. They were father and son—and the surname of each of them was McGough. The daughter of William McClaugh, and sister of William McGough, had been married as Jane McGough on May 31, 1842, in Southwold township, which was then in Middlesex county, Ontario, Canada. (See the entry on my page on the 1860 census under the name of Jane's husband, Waters Clark, under Burtchville, St. Clair county, Michigan.) In the 1870 census of Burtchville, the two Williams were still living side by side, and both of their surnames were listed as Gough. In the 1880 census of Grant township, St. Clair county, Michigan, the family surname is registered as McGough—Ellen McGough, the wife of the younger of the William McGoughs, and several of their children. The registration of the marriage of Hattie McGough, daughter of the elder William McClaugh/Gough/McGough, lists her surname as Magough. Her mother, Letitia Murdock McGough, wife of the elder William McClaugh/Gough/ McGough, is listed in the 1880 census of Chandler township, Huron county, Michigan, as Tichee Gaff (age 75). The younger of the William McGoughs was listed as William Gough in the home of his son, Charles Gough, in the 1900 census of the township of Kenockee township, St. Clair county, Michigan. This William's son, and Charles' brother, in the same township, is listed as Edgar Geough—and indexed by Ancestry.com as Geongh.
The John McGuew, age 32, born in Ireland, listed in the 1880 census of Hancock township, Houghton county, Michigan, may have been a McGough; as may be the true name of the John McGeuw listed in the 1840 census of Louisa, Iowa territory. (Another possibility is McGrew.)
Census returns of the town of Milo, Yates county, New York (see below) use six variations of the surname in listing the family name from 1850 through 1900: Gough, Goff, Magoff, McGoff, McGow and McGough. Census returns of the town of Canandaigua, Ontario county, New York (see below), use three variation of the surname in listing the same family from 1850 through 1880: McGoff, McGough, and Magough.
The surname McGough was often spelled phonetically as McGue in various censuses and other records. A classic example is the family of John and Margaret McGough who are listed as McGough in the 1870 census of Woonsocket, Providence county, Rhode Island. John McGough was a 49 year old laborer who was born in Ireland and who could neither read nor write. In most other US censuses, his surname is spelled McGue. In the 1850 census of Wareham, Bristol county, Massachusetts, this family is listed as McGue— although the record of the birth of their one year old son, James, in the vital records of nearby Taunton, Massachusetts, states that James McGough was born to John and Margaret McGough on February 28, 1849 (Massachusets Town Birth Records, Vital Records of of Taunton, on Ancestry.com). In the 1860 census, this family is listed as McGue in Somerset, Bristol county, Massachusetts. In the 1880 census, the family is listed as McGue in Woonsocket, Providence county, Rhode Island.
The surname of the same families was often spelled both McGue and McGough in censuses of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The federal censuses of Schuylkill County each spell the surname of the brothers, Terence and Andrew McGough, phonetically in 1840, 1850, and 1860, as McGue. In the census reports of 1870, the spelling of the surname of both brothers was McGough. In 1860, the hand written census forms make the name look like McGee, and the major printed index of the 1860 census of eastern Pennsylvania lists both Terence and Andrew as McGee (but as McGue in most computerized indexes).
McGue was often used to describe the non-English-speaking-Irish-immigrant McGoughs in Philadelphia and New York City after 1850. The 1866 Alabama state census lists William B. McGough of Walker County, and his large family, as McGue. Margaret McGue and Ellen McGough Larkin, who were shown as residing with Thomas Larkin by the 1870 census of Rhode Island, 1st district of North Providence, were probably sisters.
The list of casualties at the Battle of the Little Big Horn of June 25, 1876, includes a Private Peter McGue, who was killed. See also: Custer's Last Stand, 1876, Dead and Wounded and First Account of the Custer Massacre from the Extra edition of the Tribune of Bismark, Dakota Territory, of July 6, 1876. McGue was a member of company L of the 7th Calvary. This was Pvt Peter McGue who enlisted in the US Army in Troy, New York, on December 23, 1872, and who is buried on the Little Big Horn Battlefield. This was also Peter McGough who, in 1870, was 23 years old and living with his mother, Susan McGough, and brothers and sister—according to the 1870 census of Moriah, Essex county, New York. Peter was born at Port Henry, New York, which is also in Essex county, on Lake Champlain, and about 5 miles east of Moriah. Troy, New York, Peter's reported place of enlistment, is about 50 miles south of Moriah. Peter is listed in the 1850 census of Chazy, Clinton county, New York, as Peter McGoff, with his twin brother, James McGoff, both 3 years old and born in New York, the sons of James McGoff, age 32, and Betsy McGoff, age 37, both born in Ireland. The Charles McGough, age 30, listed with his family in the 1880 census of Moriah, Essex county, New York, is the younger brother of Peter McGough/McGue. The James McGue who lived nearby and who is listed as age 30, born in Ireland (?), and living with his mother, Majie (Maggie?) McGue, and with his sister Annie McGue, may be the twin brother of Peter McGough/McGue; but his sister, Annie, who is shown as age 25, should have been shown as age 37 and his mother, who is shown as age 65, should have been shown as 67, according to earlier censuses. For more on this family, see: Battle of Little Big Horn—Peter McGue, McGoff, McGough on my Odds and Ends page.
The name of Alexander McGough in the 1840 census of Duanesbugh, Schnectady county, New York, is listed as Alexander McGue in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of the same place. In the later censuses, the surnames of his relatives are also spelled McGue.
The 1910 census of Victory, Cayuga county, New York, on Lake Ontario, lists Thomas Ma Gue, age 74, born in Ireland, a general farmer, married 41 years, who was a naturalized citizen who immigrated to the US in 1876 (which must be the year of naturalization, not immigration); living with his wife, Sylvia (indexed as Sylva) A. McGue, age 68, born in New York, mother of five children, all living; and their son, William Ma Gue, age 41, single, born in New York to a father born in Ireland and a mother living in New York, a laborer (T-624, roll 928, page 3B, line 79). In the 1880 census of Wayne county, which adjoins Cayuga county to the west, in the town of Wolcott, is the same family, which is indexed by Ancestry.com as Thomas McGee (T-9, roll 944, page 555, line 26; Family History Film: 1254944). The census return can be read as McGu, but McGee is the more likely interpretation. In the family were: Thomas McGee, age 45, a farmer, born in Ireland; his wife, Sylvia A. McGee, age 39, keeping house, born in New York to parents born in New York; and 4 children, all born in New York: William, age 11; Alice, age 8; Charles, age 6; and Mabel, age 3. Living with the family was Michael's father, Michael McGee, age 76, a farm laborer, born in Ireland.
Alfred McGue was mistakenly listed by the enumerator as Alfred McGurr in the 1930 census of Tuckahoe district (a northwestern suburb or Richmond), Henrico county, Virginia. See the entry for Michael McGue under Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, in my page on the 1880 census. Thomas McGue was correctly listed in the 1900 census of the town of Whitehall, Washington county, New York, but mistakenly indexed as Thomas McGurr by Ancestry.com.
The Sarah Mcgouff, age 17, a servant, listed in the 1880 census of Loretto borough, Cambria county, Pennsylvania, in the home of Francis O'Friel, age 67, merchant, born in Ireland, and Julie Ann McGough O'Friel, age 62, born in Pennsylvania, is almost certainly Sarah McGough, a niece of Julie Ann McGough O'Friel and the daughter of her brother, Peter McGough. See my page: McGoughs in America before 1790: Arthur and Susan McGough.
The census enumerator who recorded the surnames of James and Thomas McGough as McGuogh may have come closer to the phonetic equivalent of the name, but made it difficult to find them in indexes of the 1810 US census of Cambria township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania; likewise, the recording of McGoughs as Catharine McGuff in the 1850 census of Young township, Indiana county, Pennsylvania, and James M Guff (indexed as McGuff) in the 1850 census of Derry township, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. In the 1790 census of Ninety-Six District, Abbeville County, South Carolina, John McGough is listed as John McGuough (with 2 free white males under 16, who were his sons Robert and William, and 4 free white females). See A Scots-Irish John McGoughA Seattle Connection—Emigration of Presbyterian McGoughs in 1773.
In the 1860 census of Bennington township in Marshall county, Illinois (New Rutland P. O.), the name of Patrick McGough is recorded as Pat McGowes. See McGoughs and McGues in the 1860 Census of the United States.
In the 1870 census of Osage township in LaSalle County, Illinois, the name of John McGough is recorded as John McGuegh—and indexed by Genealogy.com as McGrugh. In nearby Groveland township, also in LaSalle county, the same census taker recorded the name of Samuel McGough as Sam'l McGow. At least one careful researcher has read the script in the census record as McGou, but I read the name as McGow—in a close call. The final letter of McGow matches the "w" in Andrew on the next page of the census. The name is indexed by both Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com as Saml McGow. See McGoughs and McGues in the 1870 Census of the United States.
The 1900 census of the city of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, lists the family of James McGoff. The 1910 census of Wilkes-Barre spells the name of the same family correctly—McGough. Michelle McGoff, on her now-inactive website, had published a partial list of McGeoghs, McGeoughs, McGoffs, and McGoughs listed in various counties by the New York Census Index; that is, by the 1860 and the 1900 Census: Soundex M220 for New York State. She says that one form of her family name, McGough, was spelled McKeough in the 1905 census of Elmira New York: "I even found my Elmira McGough's in the 1905 census listed as McKeough. Their names were actually spelled 'McGough.'" Email of 29 September 1999. Elmira is in Chemung county, New York.
On the roll of the 1880 census of Springfield, Hampden county, Massachusetts, the surname of Ann McGough, age 75, born in Ireland, who could read neither read nor write, is spelled both McGough and McGoff, with McGough being above McGoff. Her name is spelled McGoff in the 1860 census of Springfield.
The Edward McGough, age 30, a coachman born in Ireland, listed in the 1880 census of Woburn (Middlesex county), Massachusetts, may be the same person listed by the same census in the same place as Edmand McGoff, age 29, coachman, born in Ireland.
Henry John McGough is listed as Henry McGoff in the 1901 census of Jacques Cartier Ward of Quebbec city. See my page: McGoughs, McGeoughs, and McGeoghs in Canada in the Nineteenth Century.
In the 1900 census of Emerson township, Faulk county, South Dakota the name of Bernard McGough is obscured on the roll (and appears to be McDough), and is indexed as Bernard McLough. Two of his children listed as living with him were Annie, age 10, born in South Dakota in June of 1889; and Joe, age 6, born in South Dakota in December, 1893. The same two children are also listed separately in the same census as Anna M. McGoff, age 10, born in South Dakota in December (should be June), 1889; and Joseph A. McGoff, age 6, born in South Dakota in December, 1893; as living in Orient township, Faulk county, South Dakota, with their 68 year old grandfather, Thomas Baker; whose daughter Margaret Baker McGough had been the wife of Bernard McGough and had died in 1899. See my page on the 1900 census.
The 1850 census of Wilmington township, Union county, Arkansas, records the surname of Sarah McGough, widow of James McGough, and her children, as MaGuse.
The surname McGonigle or McGonagle deserves special mention. Indexers often mistake that name for McGough, or a variation. For example, in the New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957, on Ancestry.com, William McGonigle (age 25) of Donegal, who sailed on the Fanny from Londonderry and arrived in New York on May 1, 1850, is indexed as McGough. On the same page of the manifest is Joseph McGonigle (age 30), also of Donegal, whose name is indexed correctly. but Michael McGonigle (age 22), also from Donegal and also on the same page of the manifest, is indexed as Michael McGarigle. Sarah and Peter McGonigle are listed on the manifest of the Mohongo when it arrived from Londonderry at New York on May 17, 1852. Both are indexed by Ancestry.com as McGeough. The All Ontario, Canada, Catholic Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1747-1967 on Ancestry.com indexes the baptism of Elizabeth McGonnigle on November, 1836 at L'Orignal as the baptism of Elizabeth McGough.
Lizzie McGonigle, who arrived in New York on February 1, 1882, aboard the Furnessia from Glasgow, Scotland, and Moville, Ireland, is indexed by Ancestry com in New York Passenger Lists, 1820–1957, as Lizzie McGough. Mary McGonigle, who arrived in New York on August 30. 1882, aboard the Devonia from the same place is indexed as Mary McGough on the same list. Bridget McGonigle, who arrivedin New York on September 10, 1884l, also aboard the Devonia from Glasgow and Moville, was indexed as Bridget McGough on the same list.
In the 1900 census of the city of Lawrence (ward 4), Essex county, Massachusetts, Catherine McGonigle (sister-in-law), age 38, single, born in September, 1861, in Scotland, to a father born in Ireland, mother born in Scotland, emigrated in 1877, 22 years in US, working in mill shading room, is indexed by Ancestry.com as Catherine McGouigh (T-623, roll 643, page 7 (or book 2, page 23), line 47). In the 1900 census of Brooklyn (ward 2), New York, Hugh McGonigle, age 30, born in Ireland in May 1870, who emigrated in 1892, a saloon keeper (T-623, roll 1043, page 3B, line 80), is indexed by Ancestry.com as Hugh Mc Gough. In the 1900 census of Kansas City (ward 2), Wyandotte County, Kansas, Miles McGonigle, age 42, born in Ireland in September, 1857, is indexed by Ancestry.com as Miles Mc Gough—with a space between the c and G. In the 1870 census of Sydney Clinton Township, Shelby County, Ohio, Joseph McGonagle, age 60, a printer and publsisher born in Pennsylvania (M-593, roll 1267, page420, line 22) is indexed by Ancestry.com as Mc Gouogh. In the 1880 census of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, Nellie McGonagle, a widow, is indexed by Ancestry.com as Mc Gouagh. In the 1910 census of New Castle (Representative District 7), William McGonigle, age 38, marrid 18 years, born in Ireland, emigrated in 1890, naturalized, a blacksmith for a street car company (T-624, roll 146, page 7A, line 19), is indexed as William McGouigh. In the 1900 census of Croyle township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania, Paredes McGough is indexed as Percile McGuire! In the 1910 census of Washinton township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania, Francis McGonigle, age 29, married 3 years, born in Pennsylvania, a laborer at odd jobs (T-624, roll 1325, page 11A, line 42), is also indexed as McGouigh. See the section below: Indexing—Ancestry.com's Every-Name Index to the 1910 and 1920 US Censuses, for more examples.
In the index to World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917–1918, on Ancestry.com, Philip Hugh McGourty of Ashtabula, Ashtabua county, Ohio, who was born in Ireland in 1887, is indexed as Philip Hugh McGough.
There are countless other quirks in the census returns and ship lists. One example worth mentioning is found in the 1860 census return for Taunton, Bristol county, Massachusetts. The country of birth of many of the inhabitants of the town was Ireland. The census enumerator abbreviated Ireland as Id. Ancestry.com, in its index, shows the place of birth of all these Irishmen as Idaho.
On subsequent pages of this website, I include versions of McGough in the US censuses of 1790 through 1900. Here are an index and links to those pages:

The 1870 census of Ohio, Erie county, Milan township (roll 1197, book 1, page 112b), lists this family—whose name was spelled McGough in Ireland.
Hugh McGue, age 50, farm laborer, with real estate worth $1000 and personal property worth $400, born in Ireland
Mary McGue, age 50, keeping house, born in Ireland
Mary McGue, age 24, born in Ireland
Rose Anna McGue, age 19, born in Ireland [according to the 1860 census, she was born in Ohio]
James McGue, age 17, born in Ohio
Hugh McGue, age 13, born in Ohio
Thomas McGue, age 8, born in Ohio
The 1860 census of Ohio, Erie county, Milan township (roll 958, book 1, page 186b) lists this same family with the surname of the parents spelled Gough and the surname of the children McGough:
H. Gough, age 40, laborer, with real estate worth $100, born in Ireland
M. Gough (female), age 39, born in Ireland
M. McGough (female), age 14, born in Ireland
A. McGough (female), age 12, born in Ireland
R. A. McGough, age 9, born in Ohio
James McGough, age 7, born in Ohio
H. M. McGough, age 3, born in Ohio
To find this family in Genealogy.com's index to the 1860 census of Ohio, it is necessary to look under Gough. The 1880 census lists the head of this family as Hugh McGue, age 65, farmer, born in Ireland.
A New York state census was taken every ten years from 1825 to 1875, in 1892, and in 1905, 1915, and 1925. In Yates County New York Census Resources for the town of Milo, the surname of the family of Patrick and Julia McGough is spelled McGough in 1855 and 1865, but Magoff in 1875. The name was Gough in the federal census of 1850, McGough in the federal census of 1860, and Goff in 1870. See my page: McGoughs and McGues in the 1870 Census of the United States.
Ruth Jordan Thoden tells me that Patrick McGough of the town of Milo, Yates county, New York, was the son Patrick McGough and Catherine Finnigan of county Louth. A brother, Thomas J. McGough, born February 2, 1827, landed in New York City in November, 1846. Thomas had a twin sister, Rose McGough. Another sister, Mary McGough, and this Patrick McGough Jr. were born in county Louth in 1828 and 1829, respectively, and came to America together in May, 1846 on the ship Virginian. The manifest of the Virginian, which arrived in New York from Liverpool on May 15, 1846, lists Patrick McGough, age 18, a laborer; and Mary McGough, age 17, a servant. On the same ship was Rose McGough, age 20, a domestic, who doubtless was their older sister (and Thomas' twin), whose true age was 19. See: McGeough & Variations—Irish Emigrant Ships on Ann McGeough Harney's website: McGeough—What's in a name?
Michelle McGoff, in her now-inactive IrishMcGoff.com website, tells the story of Patrick McGough who was born in county Louth in 1827 and died in the town of Milo, Yates County, New York, on March 15, 1885. (The records of St. Michael's Cemetery in Penn Yan, Yates county, New York, give his life span as 1829February 27, 1881.) Patrick emigrated to America and, on November 20, 1857, he petitioned to become a citizen in the town of Milo. The records of St. Michael's Cemetery in Penn Yan, Yates county, New York, show that his oldest child, Patrick Jr., was born in the town of Milo in 1850. If the place of birth is correct, Patrick had moved to Milo at least seven years before he applied for citizenship.
Patrick McGough married Julia Saunders, originally of county Cork, Ireland. They had six children: Patrick (18501884), Mary (December, 1853August 22, 1902), Rose (1857), Charles (18611943), Thomas (18621907) and Catherine (1866). The records of St. Michael's Cemetery in Penn Yan, Yates County, New York, show that the oldest child, Patrick Jr. was born in Milo, New York, in 1850. The cemetery records show that Thomas, the son of Patrick and Julia, lived from 1860 to 1906. A Thomas McGough is shown as living with Patrick and Julia by the census of the town of Milo in 1855, but this first son Thomas died, and a second son, who was born in 1862, was also named Thomas. Here is Michelle McGoff's explanation:
"As far as figuring out the Yates County info about Thomas McGough, the sons of Patrick and Julia McGoughhere's what I've got: In 1860, the census shows Patrick Jr. (age 10), Thomas (age 8), Mary (age 6), & Rose (age 3) and the three oldest had attended school that year. In 1865, the census shows Patrick Jr. (age 15), Mary (age 11), Rose (age 8), Charles (age 4) and Thomas (age 1 1/2). It looked to me as if Thomas (age 8) may have died, and they had a new baby and called him Thomas. I couldn't find any cemetery records to support this, but it seems reasonable. I also haven't searched ALL the cemeteries records yet. Maybe he's buried there somewhere."
Here are the spellings of the names of members of this family in censuses of 1850, 1855, 1860, 1865, 1870, 1875, 1892, and 1900:
The index to the 1850 census of Milo, Yates county, New York, lists Patrick and Julia Gough in dwelling #612 (should be #613), and lists no McGoughs or any other recognizable form of the name. The index is published on the website of The Yates County Office of Public History under "Resources." The index to the 1855 state census is available on film 17768 at the Family History Library, where the surname of this family is listed as McGough, and copies of the original census returns are available on films 838913 (1855), 838914 (1865), 838915 (1875), and 838916 (1892). The 1892 state census of Milo lists two of the sons of Patrick and Julia McGough living in the same household: Charles McGough, age 32, blacksmith; Thomas McGough, age 29, blacksmith; and four other McGoughs living with them: Maggie McGough, age 32, born in Ireland (Charles's wife); Thomas McGough, age 8, born in the US; Theresa McGough, age 6, born in the US, and Willie McGough, age 4, born in the US (Charles' children). The family of Charles McGough, blacksmith with his own shop, and Margaret McGough, ages 49 and 47 respectively, are listed in the 1910 census of Penn Yan Village, Milo township, Yates county. (roll 1075, page 210)
The 1900 census of Milo lists the son of Patrick and Julia McGough as Charles McGoff, age 38, born in July, 1862, in New York to parents born in Ireland, married 18 years, blacksmith, on Cornell Street (roll 1179, page 160). His wife and children are also listed as McGoffs. The family of Charles McGough, blacksmith with his own shop, and Margaret McGough, ages 49 and 47 respectively, are listed in the 1910 census of Penn Yan Village, Milo township, Yates county (roll 1075, page 210).
The town of Milo censuses used five variations of the surname for the family of Patrick and Julia McGough: Gough, Goff, Magoff, McGoff, and McGough. A sixth variation McGow, was applied to another McGough in Yates county—who married Mary McGough, a daughter of Patrick and Julia McGough. John McGow is listed in the 1860 census of the town of Milo:
(1860) John McGow, age 16, farm laborer, born in Ireland, attended school within the year; living in the household of George P. Monell, age 41, farmer (roll 885, page 533).
This is John McGough who was born in county Louth on August 30, 1844, and died on September 28, 1934, in Himrods, Yates County, New York. He married Mary McGough, daughter of Patrick McGough and Julia Saunders, probably about 1876. (Their first child, Charles McGough, was born in October of 1877; their second, John H. McGough, in December of 1878.) John McGough is also buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Penn Yan, New York.
The town of Jerusalem is in Yates county, about 6 miles southwest of the town of Milo and about the same distance and direction from the town of Penn Yan. John McGough is listed in the 1870 census of the town of Jerusalem in this manner
(1870) John McGoff, age 28, farm laborer, born in Ireland, living on the farm of James Miller. (roll 1120, page 485b). [John's future wife, Mary McGough, the daughter of Patrick McGough, as 16 at the time of the 1870 census.]
Be the time of the 1880 census, John McGough had married Mary McGough. The 1875 New York state census lists a John and Mary McGoff living together in the town of Milo, and no form of McGough is listed in the town of Jerusalem. Here is their listing in the 1880 census of the town of Milo:
(1880) John McGough, age 35, farming, born in Ireland (roll 949, page 482C).
Mary McGough, age 25, keeping house, born in New York.

Here is information on John McGough from the now dormant website of Michelle McGoff-McCann:
"John McGough was born in County Louth to Michael McGeough and Mary Farrell on August 30, 1844. He had 3 siblings, Michael, Ann and Bridget all living in the Darver Parish. The family emigrated to America in the Spring of 1850, just 5 years after the start of the famine in Ireland.
"The family settled in New York State. John eventually moved to Yates County, in the Town of Milo. On August 30, 1862, John enlisted at Penn Yan in the 44th Regiment New York State Infantry Volunteers to become a soldier in the Civil War. He mustered in on August 30, 1962 for 3 years of service. John served under Captain Munger and fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. John's service was completed in 1865.
"After the war, John settled down in Penn Yan and married a woman by the name of Mary McGough (1853–1902)—they had the same surname. Mary's father, Patrick McGough was from County Louth also, but of no proven relation to John.
"John and Mary had 4 children: Charles (b.1877 - d.1961), John H. (b.1878 - d.1959), Anna Rose (b.1894 - d.1980) and Albert George (b.1896 - d.1981).
"John raised his family and lived in Yates County until his death on September 28, 1934. At the time of his death, John was the oldest living GAR veteran of New York State who had served at Gettysburg. He was 90 years old. ... He is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Penn Yan, New York."
In St. Michael's Cemetery, Penn Yan, Yates County, New York, is the gravestone of John McGough, Sr. (1844–1934), who served in the Civil War in the 44th company, 5th NY Volunteers, and his wife, Mary McGough (1854–1902).
In the censuses of the town of Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, for 1850 through 1870, as published in the Historical Census Records for Ontario County, the surname of the family of the David and Mary McGough family is variously spelled as McGoff in the federal census of 1850; McGough in the state census of 1855; Magough in the federal census of 1860; McGough in the state census of 1865, and McGoff in the federal census of 1870. After the name was spelled McGough in three consecutive state censuses, it was spelled McGoff in the state census of 1875, and after McGoff., Magough, and McGoff in three consecutive federal census, McGough in 1880. The William J. McGough, age 49, laborer, born in New York in January 1850, to Irish born parents, listed with his wife Margaret McGough and daughter Mary H. McGough, in the 1900 census of the city of Rochester, Monroe county, New York (roll 1075, book 2, page 90a), is almost certainly the son of David and Mary McGough.

A good source is Ontario County (New York) Records and Archives Center. The records of Deaths in the Village/City of Canandaigua, 18821889 shows that David McGough died on June 19, 1891 and that Mary McGough died on July 21, 1892. The Surrogate Court Records, 17891926 show the probate of Mary McGough's estate in 1894.
Here are parts of postings of November 27, 2001, and December 12, 2001, by Ray Sherwood of Arizona in the McGough Archive on RootsWeb.com:
"David and Mary are my GGGparents, were born in Ireland.
"David b. 1815 d. 19 Jun 1891, Mary b. 1818 d. 21 July 1892. Also located Mary' parents Joseph Wilson. 1790 and Margaret b. 1788 both born in Ireland."

"I'm searching the McGough's with many spellings. I've found McGough, McGoff and Magough in the line from 1845 to 1880.
"I have a brick wall which is my Mother's parents. 1880 shows my Gmother Hattie age 7 and her sister Alice age 10 living with their Gparents David and Mary in Canandaigua, Ontario County, NY. No info as to her parents. I have found out that her dad was John, but no info on her mom, not even a trace.
" I found a notation in my fathers military records indicating that she was born in Watkins (now Watkins Glen) but no reference as to her maiden name."
The records of Marriages in Canandaigua, NY, Ontario County, 18821908 show that on October 6, 1898, George McGough married Emma White. The Death Index, Canandaigua, volume 4, 19051909 shows that George F. McGough died on December 6, 1908. The Surrogate Court Records, 17891926 show the probate of the estate of George F. McGough in 1908. Since these other records all spell the name McGough, we can safely conclude that the spellings of the surname as McGoff in the 1850 and 1870 censuses and as Magough in the 1860 census are forms of McGough—although the man whose estate was probated in 1908 under the name George Frederick McGough is listed in the 1900 census of Canandaigua as Fred McGoff.

Terence McGough was born in Ireland in about 1800. Andrew McGough was born in Ireland in about 1805. They were probably brothers. They emigrated from Ireland to New York, probably together, no later than 1827. They moved to Pennsylvania no later than 1830. Terence's wife was Ann, also known as Nancy, who was born in Ireland in 1804. Andrews' wife was Elizabeth, who was born in Ireland about 1818. The brothers lived next door to each other in different locations in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, for over forty years. Each family grew large.
The federal censuses of Schuylkill County each spell the surname phonetically in 1840, 1850, and 1860: McGue. In 1870 the spelling of the surnames of both families was changed in the census reports to McGough. Terence died in 1875 and his estate records spell his surname as McGough. In 1880, the census spells the name of Andrew's family as McGough. In real estate records of Schuylkill County, the name was spelled McGough from the beginning. See: McGoughs and McGues in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, in the 1800s. In 1860, the handwritten census forms make the name look like McGee, and the major index of the 1860 census of eastern Pennsylvania lists both Terence and Andrew as McGees.
The federal census of 1840 shows families headed by Terence McGue and Andrew McGue living side by side in Norwegian township (page 192), Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
Terence is shown as a male, at least 40 and under 50, and engaged in mining. His wife is shown as a female, at least 30 and under 40. Three other males were living in the house, two of whom were at least 10 and under 15, and one of whom was under 5.
Andrew is shown as a male, at least 30 and under 40, engaged in manufacturing and the trades. His wife as is shown at least 20 and under 30. One female child, under 5, is shown in the household. Also residing in the household is another male, at least 20 and under 30.
The federal census of 1850 shows families headed by Terrance McGue and Andrew McGue living side by side in New Castle township (page 156), Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania:
Terrance McGue. Age 50. Laborer. Born in Ireland. Cannot read and write.

Peter McGoff, a son, age 3 months, born in January, 1900, in Pennsylvania.
The 1910 census of the city of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania (roll 1370, book 2, page 58), lists the family of James McGough:
James McGough, age 38, married 12 years, born in Kentucky to parents born in Ireland, an insurance agent, and owner of the family home.
Margaret McGough, his wife, age 33, born in Ireland, mother of 7 children, 6 of whom were living, immigrated to the US in 1883.

In an email of October 26, 2003, Peter James McGough III of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, who was born in Toronto, tells me that the Peter McGough, listed as three months old in the 1900 census and as ten years old in the 1910 census, was his grandfather.
"My grandfather, for whom I was named after, was one of 10 brothers and sisters and was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in I believe 1900 (Feb. 29th). Planters Peanuts was started in Wilkes-Barre and he started working for them in his early teens and moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1925 to start Planters of Canada of which he was President from 1925 until his retirement in 1965.
"Of my grandfather's brothers, I remember his brother Jimmy from Scranton, Stephen a Fire Fighter in Wilkes-Barre and John who moved to the southern US and changed his last name to McGoff."
The history of Planters Peanuts says that they opened their first international office in Toronto, Canada, in 1925.
The grandparents, Peter McGough and Helen Marley McGough, were buried in Woodland, Kitchener, cemetery (sections G, H, HC), Waterloo County, Waterloo township, Ontario, Canada. See Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid and my page McGoughs in Canada under Ontario—Waterloo County—Waterloo Township.
The first census of the United States was in 1790.
The 1790 census of Harford county, Maryland, lists the widow of Miles McGough (senior) as:
75 196 MGeough Eliza (roll 3, book 1, page 100) in a household of 7: 5 free white males 16 and up; 2 females.
Living close to Eliza was one of her sons:
75 185 MGeough Jm. (roll 3, book 1, page 99) also with a family of 7: 1 free white male 16 and up; 3 free white males to 16; 3 females.
The 1800 census lists a James Megeough (indexed by Genealogy.com as McGeough) in Maryland, Harford county (Locale: 5-District, series M32, roll 11, part 1, page 129), next to his brother Thomas Megeough, with 2 free white males to 10, 1 free white male to 16; 1 free white male between 26 and 45; 4 free white females under10; 3 free white females between 10 and 16; 1 free white female between 26 and 45 (and 2 slaves).
James McGough and his younger brothers Miles McGough (junior) and Thomas McGough moved to Cambria county, Pennsylvania, in about 1803, where the later censuses consistently spelled their names McGough.
The surname of Arthur McGough first appears in the tax records of New Castle county, Delaware, as McDouch in 1789; as McDough in 1791 and 1794; as McGooch in 1795; and as McGouch in 1796. The recorder grew closer and closer to the correct spelling, but never got it right. Arthur's grandson, Samuel McGough, was listed as Samuel McGouch in the 1880 census of Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, but is listed correctly as McGough in the 1850 and 1860 census of Washington township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania.
Since the records of the federal census of Delaware for 1790 are lost, researchers created substitute census lists from tax records and other documents. Leon DeValinger, Jr., the state archivist for Delaware, prepared a Reconstructed 1790 Census of Delaware based on tax lists in Delaware. Arthur McGough and his family were living in the Mill Creek Hundred of New Castle County, Delaware (near Wilmington) in 1790. I could not find Arthur McGough in DeValinger's, but he does list an Arthur McDouch among the tax payers in the Mill Creek Hundred of New Castle county, Delaware. Films 6531 and 6532 in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City contain the tax assessment lists for the Mill Creek Hundred in New Castle County for the last part of the 18th century. In checking these tax records, I found the name Arthur McDouch clearly written on the 1789 tax assessment list for the Mill Creek Hundred (film 6531). The name was Arthur McDough in the 1791 list (film 6532); Arther McDough, with 2 acres, in the 1794 list; Arthur McGooch, with 2 acres, in the 1795 list; and Arthur McGouch in the 1796 list. All these entries were for Arthur McGough. The tax list of April 17, 1798, did not contain the name, and I assume that the family moved to Cambria county, Pennsylvania, before that time, where all records spell the name McGough. See my page: McGoughs in America before 1790: Arthur and Susan McGough.
The 1860 Federal Census Index [page 147, ID #WI456123725] for north Eau Claire, Wisconsin, shows the name of my great grandfather as John McGue. As far as I know, for legal and formal purposes, he always used McGough, and that is the name he has handed down to his descendants. The record of John McGough's naturalization in Eau Claire on December 23, 1857, mistakenly shows his name as John McGrough. This is the only time I have seen his name with an r in it.
My great-grandfather's name, however, is listed as John McGue in the Birth, Marriage and Death Index to Eau Claire Free Press, 18581871, compiled by Kathy Anderson and self published. This is an index entry that refers to an article in the Eau Claire Free Press of January 6, 1870, reporting the sad accident in which my great grandfather John McGough died. The index picked up the spelling of the name as it appeared in the newspaper article. He was buried as John McGough. His widow, Catherine Fitzpatrick McGough, always used the name McGough. My father's name is listed as Thomas R. McGue in the Wisconsin Pre-1907 Birth Index by Name. (Reel 0063, Record 001148). He always used McGough, as did his parents, brothers, and sisters. My father's birth date is also listed incorrectly: January 3, 1900 in the index, January 3, 1901 in fact. See McGoughs and McGues in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 18561906.
The family of my grandfather, Hugh McGough, are listed as McGues in the 1900 census of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and McGoughs in the 1910 and later censuses.
The Wisconsin federal and state census of 1900 for Eau Claire, Wisconsin, shows Michael (60) and Mary A. (50), along with their children Terrance (23), Anna (21), Michael (19), James (17), Mary (14) and John (11) as McGoughs. The Wisconsin census of 1905 for Eau Claire shows the widow, Mary and the same 6 children, as McGues.
James H. McGough is shown as living with his mother, the widow Catherine McGough (my great grandmother), in the 1880 Wisconsin federal census for Eau Claire, He is listed as James H. McGue in the 1905 Wisconsin state census, where his wife and five children are all listed as McGues. James H. McGough was born and died as a McGough and I have no evidence other than the 1905 Wisconsin state census that he ever used the name McGue. He appears as James McGough in the 1860 and 1870 federal censuses of Wisconsin. See McGoughs and McGues in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 18561906.
Early English censuses of Ireland were also none too accurate. In the 1659 census of county Monaghan, McGough is listed as the 32nd most common name in Monaghan, with 10 heads of McGough families listed. The only form of the name listed is McGough. This census is reprinted as Appendix III to The History of the County of Monaghan by Evelyn Philip Shirley (1879).
In the Hearth Money Rolls, prepared 4 and 6 years later, the only recognizable forms of the name listed in county Monaghan were McGeough, McGeogh, and McGogh. There were no McGoughs. The name also appears as McGorke and McGorky. Torlogh McGorke is listed in 1663 in the townland of Elvey in the parish of Errigal Trough. Torlogh McGeogh is listed for the same townland in 1665. Dunsleve McGorky is listed for 1663 in the townland of Glasmullagh in the parish of Errigal Trough. He appears as Dunsleve McGeough in 1665 in the same townland. See Hearth Money Rolls for County Monaghan: McGeogh, McGeough, and McGogh. Dunsleve is the anglicized version of the Gaelic Dunsleibe.
The name of Robert McGeogh also appeared as Robert McGorke in subsidy rolls of the parish of Kildress in county Tyrone is 1666. The subsidy rolls of county Tyrone in 1666 for the barony of Dungannon show that Robert McGeogh paid two installments of a subsidy to the king, each of of £3 0 11, on property in the civil parish of Kildress. Elsewhere in the same document, also under the parish Kildress, the name of the same payer of another installment was reported as Robert McGorke. Since only three persons in Kildress were making payments—obviously all men of affluence—I am almost certain that Robert McGeogh and Robert McGorke were the same person. See my page: McGoughs, McGeoughs and McGoughs in County Tyrone.
In the 1659 census of county Armagh, in contrast to the census of county Monaghan in the same year, 4 McGeoughs are listed, and no McGoughs. I found neither McGoughs, McGeoughs, McGeoghs, nor McGoghs in the 1659 census in any other county. See: A Census of Ireland, circa 1659, edited by Seamus Pender (1939), which is film #924648 in the Family History Centers.
The International Genealogical Index (IGI) displays a variety of spellings of the surname of the same person or the same family. For example:
James McGeogh and Elizabeth McEvoy are listed by the IGI as parents of Mary McGeogh born on June 25, 1866, in Dundalk, Louth, Ireland; and Ann McGeogh born on March 5, 1868, in Louth, Ireland. James McGeough and Eliza McEvoy are listed by the IGI as parents of James McGeough, born on December 6, 1872, in Louth. James McGough and Elizabeth McEvoy are listed by the IGI as the parents of Bridget McGough born on June 12, 1875, in Dundalk, Louth, Ireland.
James McGough and Ann Grimes are listed by the IGI as parents of Sarah McGough born on January 29, 1867, at Killyleagh, Down, Ireland; and James McGough, born on November 7, 1873, in Antrim, Ireland. James Magoff and Ann Grimes are listed by the IGI as parents of Elizabeth Magoff born on June 28, 1864, at Killyleagh, Down, Ireland. James Magoff and Rose Ann Grimes are listed by the IGI as parents of Rose Ann Magoff born on January 28, 1866, at Killyleagh, Down, Ireland.
Thomas McGough and Mary McEffett are listed by the IGI as parents of James McGough whose birth was registered in Raferagh, parish of Donaghmoyne, county Monaghan, on September 17, 1864. Thomas McGoff and Mary McEffett are listed by the IGI as parents of Peter McGoff whose birth was registered on November 7, 1866, in Raferagh, Monaghan, Ireland.
Patrick McGoff and Mary Ferrall are listed by the IGI as parents of Mary Anne Catherine McGoff born on January 18, 1869, in Dublin. Patrick McGough and Mary Ferrall are listed by the IGI as parents of Patrick Ferrall Mc Gough born on July 15, 1872, at North City No. 1, city of Dublin, Ireland; and Mary Pauline McGough born on July 7, 1874, at Dublin.
See my page: Spelling of McGough.
In June of 2006, Ancestry.com released a new every-name index to the 1910 United States Federal Census. The names of those listed on the population schedule are linked to images of the 1910 Federal Census, copied from the National Archives and Records Administration microfilm, T624, 1,784 rolls. This index incorporates the old head-of-household index and adds to it a new every name index—including a re-keying of the heads of households. In the new index, therefore, for many heads of households there are two names—a primary, and an alternate. The primary name is the newly keyed name. The alternate name is the name as it appeared in the original head of household only index. Alternate names are only displayed when there is a difference in the way the name was keyed between the two indexes, and they ordinarily appear only for the head of the household and the spouse, since the children were not listed in the earlier head-of-household index.
The new indexing was accomplished by workers in India, , and Sri Lanka. The indexers were given some training in reading English handwriting of the 1910 era, but were far from proficient in interpreting names of Gaelic origin such as McGough. (There are many laughable cases of mistaken trancriptions; for example: the 1870 mortality schedule of Washington township, Cambria county, Pennsylvania lists John McGough, age 56, who died in May, 1870, of chronic bronchitis. The Ancestry.com index describes the cause of death as Cronick Browchitis.) In many cases listed in this section, the name of the head of the household was originally correctly listed as McGough, but mistakenly recorded as something else in the newly-keyed surnames. The children can usually be found in the index only under the newly keyed surname.
The every-name index for the 1920 census was released by Ancestry.com in 2005, and the same basic process was used in preparing it.
The overall new indexing of both the 1910 and 1920 censuses was better than the following lists might indicate, but suffers from the lack of editing by an experienced eye. Several previous indexing errors were corrected. For example, in the old 1920 index to the census of Assembly District 72, Los Angeles city, Los Angeles county, California, Miya Myoughi, age 21, born in Japan to Japanese parents, a maid (T-625. roll 112, page 5B, line 54) had been indexed as Maiya McGough. In the index to the 1920 census of Williams town, Conconino county, Arizona, Chanders Marquez, age 38, born in New Mexico to parents born in New Mexico, a sheep herder, living in a neighborhood made up entirely of families with Spanish names, had been indexed as McGough (T-625, roll 46, page 5B, line 64).
In the 1910 census of Cambridge, Middlesex county, Massachusetts, Edward McDougal, age 25, a boarder, single, born in England, who had emigrated in 1910, a press man in a hose (?) mill (T-624, roll 596, page 17B, line 72), had been indexed as Edward McGough.
In the 1910 census of Trenton (ward 4), Hudson county, New Jersey, William H. McGowan, (T-624, roll 896, page 10B, line 55), age 35, married for 20 years to Anna E. McGowan, had been incorrectly indexed as McGough.
In the 1910 census of Westfield (ward 4), Union county, New Jersey, Ann McGarigle, a 65, a widow, born in Ireland, a laundress working out of her home (T-624, roll 911, page 12A, line ) and her son James McGarigle, age 39, single, born in New Jersey to parents born in Ireland, a blacksmith at car shops, both had been incorrectly indexed as McGough.
In the 1910 census of the Bronx (assembly district 32), New York City, Thomas McGonigle, age 53, born in Ireland, who had emigrated in 1902, a potter in a warehouse (T-624, roll 997, page 7B, line 90), his wife of 26 years, Rebecca McGonigle, age 48, born in Ireland, emigrated in 1902, a seamstress, had been incorrectly indexed as McGough, and are now indexed as McGonagle. (The names of Thomas McGonigle of Donegal, age 48, a laborer, his wife, Rebecca, age 35, of Donegal, and their four children, all born in Dongal, are on the manifest of the S. S. Astoria that arrived in New York from Londonderry on May 12, 1902, but the names are lined through.)
In the 1920 census, Edward McGarigle of Chicago (ward 25), Cook county, Illinois (T625, roll 343, page 9A, line 43) had been indexed as McGough, and is indexed, still erroneously, as McGarigh in the new index.
(1920) Gerald McGonigle, age 29, born in Kansas to parents born in Ireland, in Guittard, Marshall county, Kansas (T-625, roll 540, page 4A, line 12), had been indexed as McGough.

(1920) In Meridian, King county, Washington, John A. McGonagle, age 57, single, born in Pennsylvania (T-625, roll 1924, page 3B, line 82), had been indexed as McGough.

McGeogh. The revised index listed him as William S. McGeagh.
(1920) In Passagrilla, Pinellas county, Florida, Albert C. McGeagh, age 35, born in Pennsylvania, a physician in general practice (T-625, roll 229, page 5B, line 61) (with his wife, Myrtle, age 33; daughter Mary M., age 12; and son William P, age 10, all born in Pennsylvania), had been indexed as Albert C. McGeogh.
(1920) In Flint (ward 6), Genessee county, Michigan, Roger D. McGeagh, age 25, born in Michigan, a toolmaker at a sparkplug factory (T-625, roll 766, page 7B, line 96) (with wife, Hilda W., age 23, also born in Michigan) had been indexed as Roger D. McGough.
In the 1910 census of Baker, Lafayette county, Arkansas, Will McGough (black), age 38, a widower born in Arkansas to parents born in Georgia, a laborer for the city (T-624, roll 53, page 26A, line 14), along with his wife, Theo McGough (black), age 25, born in Louisiana, and their four children, are indexed as DeGough.

Nearby is Charles McGough, age 48, born in Pennsylvania, married 23 years, engineer, stationery; with his wife, Margaret McGough, age 41, born in Pennsylvania, mother of 5 children, 5 living; whose surnames are indexed as McClough, and their children (Margaretta, age 11; Blair, age 14; and Raphael age 15, all born in Pennsylvania) whose surnames in the census return are spelled McGeough (T-624, roll 1323, page18A, line 11). The surnames of the parents are indexed as McClough. The surnames of their children are indexed as McGeorge, and can be found in the index only under the surname McGeorge.
In the 1910 census of Wolcott (enumeration district 134), Lamoille county, Vermont, are listed Patsey McGough, age 49, born in Vermont to parents born in Ireland, married 18 years, a laborer at odd jobs; and his wife, Mary McGough, age 35, born in Ireland, mother of 7 children, 7 living, with all 7 of their children (T-624, roll 1612, page3A, line 48). The head of the household is indexed as as Patsey McGarrah, as are his wife and oldest son Martan (Newton in the 1900 census). The other six children are on the next page of the census return and are correctly indexed as McGough! They are: Owen McGough, age 15; Donald McGough, age 12; Earl McGough, age 9; Harvey McGough, age 6; Mabel McGough, age 4; and Mildred McGough, age 2. The same family is listed in Belvidere Lower (enumeration district 124), Lamoille county, Vermont, under Patrick McGough, age 50, born in Vermont, the birth date of whose parents was unknown, married 18 years, a farm laborer, working out (T-624, roll 1612, page 2A, line 22). With him are listed his wife, Mary McGough, age 36, born in Vermont, mother of 7 children, all living, with their children, all of whom were born in Vermont: Morton McGough, age 17, a farm laborer, working out; Owen McGough, age 15; Donald McGough, age 13; Earl McGough, age 11; Henry McGough, age 8; Mary McGough, age 4; and Hersey (?) McGough, age 2. This second listing of the family is correctly indexed as McGough, but the index erroneously lists them as mulattos.
In the 1910 census of New Orleans, the family of William McGough (McGoff) is listed on Broad Street as follows:
(1910) William McGough (written over as McGoff, with the underlying h untouched by the overwriting, indexed as McGoffh), male, white, age 36, 1st marriage (?), married 3 years, born in Ohio, to parents born in Ireland, boiler maker, employed in a boiler shop, renting a house (T-624, roll 520, page10 B, line 93) [Listed as William C. McGough, age 46, a boiler maker in a ship yard, in the 1920 census of New Orleans (line 49).]
Irene McGough (indexed as McGoffh), wife, female, white, age 29 (interpreted as 19 by Ancestry.com), 2nd marriage, married 3 years, mother of 8 children, 5 living, born in Louisiana to parents born in Louisiana. [Irene McGough is listed as 38 in the 1920 census (line 50) and mistakenly indexed by Ancestry.com as Annie McGough. She is listed as Irene M. McGough, age 50 in the 1930 census of New Orleans.
